How many watts would I need to run a refrigerator and a 1hp water pump? and maybe a tv and set top box? Thinking about a genny for the cottage.

You would be fine with 4000w but probably need a 240v for the pump this generator would be enough

According to this generator estimation page, the start-up watts for a refrigerator is 1,200 watts, 200 watts running. Things with compressors have much higher startup requirements vs running.
1/2 HP Sump pump is 2150 watt start up, 1050 running,
TV is <200 watts. Cable box would be minimal.

So this would be lots.

One HP is 745 Watts so how do you calculate a 1/2 HP pump using 1050 watts running? Excluding wiring losses, 1/2 HP is 372 Watts. If the motor was only 50% efficient in converting electrical power into mechanical power even then it would only use 745 Watts running.
The poster wrote water pump, not sump pump, so I assume it is a well water pump so yes, the startup current would be high, actually much higher than a sump pump since it has to push against a tall column of water on startup, more than what most sump pumps would have to push against.

I didn't calculate anything. As per my post I was quoting numbers from the link I provided. It only has a "sump pump", not a "water pump" but that seemed like it would be useful so I provided it.
If you know more about the matter than the Honda Power Equipment website or about Dealfan's equipment, have at it.

A 1hp well pump 25amp could draw up to 2500watt on startup and operate at 1400w

I wouldn't plug anything like a tv in to this directly. If wiring it into a box with breakers that would be fine. Inverter generator is much better for electronics like that

The numbers you quote seem to be correct although I don't know why. Other web sites also quote similar wattages that make the motors seem horribly inefficient, which I know they are not. I'm referring to running wattages, not startup.

I have a 1/2 HP submersible (240V) so I will do an Amperage check today and post back.
