Car Code Reader?

Hi

I am looking for a car code reader. I don't need anything professional and it connecting to my android phone would be good enough. However I m seeing huge price ranges for them some for $15, $25 and even $120.

What are the differences? Right now all the cars I would be using it on are mazdas and honda civics.

Are these stand alone ones better than the ones that connect to your phone? Also one of my family's cars is a 2002 Mazda Protege so it seems like it would not work with this car? I would prefer something to work with it as well if possible. Even my car just makes the cut off with 2008 mazda 3.
