car ownership & insurance with international license?

car ownership & insurance with international license?

Asking this for a family member, they are immigrating to Canada next month and all they have is just a international license, is it possible to own a car, as in properly register the car, and buy insurance with a international license?

any experience?

I think it depends on province. There was a huge debate here in BC on this subject. ICBC says one thing, RCMP says another. Buying a car however, does not require a license. Even normal Canadians can buy a car without a license. For reasons why, there are multiple, one being that you can always hire a driver to drive you around. In BC, you can drive for up to 6 months, after that you need to get canadian license and renew insurance. It's also different if they're a student.
