Car rental insurance question

Alberta resident. Booked a rental for our Hawaii trip later this fall and was curious about insurance. Checked my credit card and covered for most but liability which is standard. Called my broker and they said my current auto policy is not valid in Hawaii, as it is not a continental state. I was pretty shocked and confirmed with another insurance agent. Do anyone have any recommendations besides going through the rental company? I see rentalcover.com might be an option but only has a $1 million max. It was suggested to me to ensure I have $2million being in the US.

Thanks in advance for the suggestions

Always read your policy. The Alberta S.P.F. No. 1 wording would be the applicable wording.

BTW, did you ask where in the policy that coverage is restricted and not applicable to a non-continental state?
GENERAL PROVISIONS, DEFINITIONS AND EXCLUSIONS
1. TERRITORY
This Policy applies only while the automobile is being operated, used, stored or parked within Canada, the United
States of America or upon a vessel plying between ports of those countries.

5. AUTOMOBILE DEFINED
under Sections A (Third Party Liability) and B (Accident Benefits) only
(d) Any automobile of the private passenger type, other than the described automobile, while personally driven by the Insured, or by the Insured’s spouse/adult interdependent partner if residing in the same dwelling premises as the Insured
I don't see any reference to continental United States.

Are you absolutely sure that you specified that you were asking for only liability and not the car itself? If yes, time for a new broker.

I agree, this was his third response hence my call to another broker as I have never heard of such an exclusion for the US. “ Alberta insurance companies do not cover any auto insurance for use in Hawaii and do not provide any riders or endorsements to add to policies.” I looked for my policy and you are right I did not see anything to speak to continental states.

Thanks for the info!

What is the liability that's required in Hawaii?

I have no idea what it is, but if the required liability is say $1M in Hawaii then that's what the rental agency will have to have. If you are ok with that then you don't need to do anything else.

Otherwise you can take the extra insurance with the rental company (probably expensive) or a third party insurer in the USA.

In the end, looks like I will not be needing additional insurance through the rental company as my current policy will be fine. After speaking again with my broker, he agreed with what everyone said here and quoted the Alberta Insurance Act himself. He provided me with the insurers local number which I didn’t mind escalating as I knew they were incorrect (he probably should have done this). After speaking with an underwriter, who confirmed with their superior Hawaii is indeed included. I guess this will lead to future meetings to get everyone on the same page, as obviously poor advice has been provided by all involved. Thanks again for all your information and suggestions!
