Which cards allow autopay of the full balance?

Tried searching but not getting clear answers. I want my credit card to be automatically paid in full from my chequing account each month. My SPG Amex does this and so does my BMO WE. Just set it and forgot. No way I accidentally miss the deadline.

I'm tired of paying 200$ a year and then having BMO devalue the WE card. I switched to the Scotia Passport Visa but it won't allow me to autopay the balance in full from my bank account.

Does the PC Financial WE have autopay? Any other good rewards card? What are my options here to replace my BMO WE?
Thread Summary
Note: If you can't find autopay from your online account or mail/fax is all you see below, give your bank a call, it might be possible to set up by phone. Please reply to this thread to share your experiences or help us update this summary! :)

Apparently if you contact Scotiabank they can set this up for you on your Passport Visa.

It actually is possible. It's an undocumented feature so you won't find out about on Scotiabank's site. Like with so much else about Scotiabank, setting it up requires an in-person visit to a branch.

My experience of banks/cards that can do auto pay of full balance:

Scotiabank YES
American Express YES
Capital One YES
Rogers YES
HSBC YES
BMO YES
Canadian Tire YES
MBNA YES
Meridian Credit Union NO

I can add a +1 to the above post for Capital One. I have this feature enabled on my Capital One Costco MC.

add td ct yes. until last year, only from a td ct bank account. since 2018, can be from external, just fax the form...like amex & mbna. canadian tire is also the easiest to setup, imo.

To answer your direct question regarding PC Financial, they do have pre-authorized debit that can pay your statement balance. It requires filling out a PDF and sending it in.
Banking: Alterna Bank (2.5%), Motive Financial (4.1%)
Investing: Qtrade Direct Investing
Spending: Scotia Amex Gold (6 pts/Sobeys, 5 pts/dining, 1 pts/rest), Scene Visa (1 pts)
Mobile: Eastlink 20GB Rollover ($39/mth)

When you set these up, when do they generally withdraw the funds? Just after the statement date or just before the statement due date?

I did go into a Scotia branch and they told me if it was only if I had a Scotia account. Wouldn't let me use my own bank.

I went home and called and the rep on the phone said the same thing.

How did you make it work?

Mine (Costco Capital One MC) takes it out right before the statement due date.

Both my Amex and BMO show up as an EFT on the statement date. Surprisingly, Tangerine is debited a few days after the statement date even though I'm using a Tangerine chequing account. The card balance shows up as paid on the statement date though.

Not what both a branch and phone rep told me. Only for Scotia chequing accounts they said.

Should I go in again and try?

I educated the Scotiabank employees on their own policies. I had both my Scotiabank credit cards pulling the full balance from my chequing account at Vancity every month. Go back with a voided blank cheque and try again...

On your due date. At least based on what I noticed.

Brim Financial presently doesn’t, although I’ve reached out and requested this feature.

Thankfully, many do offer it. I have TD, BMO, Capital One, MBNA, Rogers and CTFS currently all set up to auto-pay, most include both options of paying the full statement balance or a specific predefined amount. Other RFD members have confirmed that Scotiabank does offer it, but your mileage may vary in actually getting them to do it! Some people reported being able to have them set it up via secure message through the banking. I tried that several times and they said no. When I called customer service, I was told that over the phone, they can set up auto-pay only if it's debiting a Scotiabank account, but if I go in-person to a branch, they can accommodate to set up auto-pay debited to an external bank account. Pretty ridiculous if you ask me, considering that even BMO allows you to set up auto-pay yourself online (pulling from any external account).

I called Tangerine, and was told that they do auto-pay but only if debited from a Tangerine account.

Rogers WE is a good replacement for BMO WE, considering it has a higher cashback rate (1.75% instead of 1.50%) on top of having no annual fee. It depends whether the rest of the perks/insurance stuff lines up for you, but I think it's a no brainer card to have.

Scotiabank's training on this matter is very poor. My experience:

  • Called in to ask about it. They said it's possible but I need to visit a branch.
  • Visited branch and set it up for my Momentum card, pulling payment from my credit union. Easy.
  • Visited different branch a year later to set it up for my new Scotia Amex card. Teller gave me a form to take to my credit union and get them to fill it out and stamp it. I told her I didn't have to do that for my other Scotiabank credit card. She clicked away on her computer and then took the form back, and set it up the PAP there.

I laughed my arse off when Scotiabank made the top of some list of the best banks in Canada for mobile banking. Scotiabank—the one bank that makes you visit a branch to do trivial things that most other banks can do online.

I went in again to the branch and they said no way they could do this. I argued for a while but they wouldn't help me out. What am I doing wrong here?

You are encountering poorly trained employees. Go to a different branch. You can set up PAP at any Scotiabank branch, it doesn't have to be your home branch.

You can auto pay your HSBC World Elite this way? My AX card can, but HSBC? That's news to me! How?
