Career path for scripting? What's the best language to learn?

What is a career path for someone interested in scripting (bash, PHP, VB, etc) but not interested in web design or programming?

I'm guessing it's something to do with automation or maybe database administration?


What's the best or most useful language to learn? Instead of learning a bit of everything I'd rather spend time mastering one or two languages.
