CARSTAR Willowdale ** DO NOT GO THERE **

I'm just sharing my experience with CARSTAR Willowdale location at 4656 Yonge Street.
My car is going back for the 4th repair next week. I will update the thread with the pictures.

1st Repair (Aug 22 - Aug 26):
CARSTAR had my car for a week to fix the dent and scratches on my BMW 5 Series. Nothing major, all just cosmetic.
When I picked up my car, there was a big paint splatter at the bottom of left rear door.
They told me to come back next Wednesday for the repair.

2nd Repair (Aug 31):
I took the car back to CARSTAR on Wednesday as they asked.
They told me to pick up the car at the end of the day, and the car will be ready.
When I picked up my car at 6pm. They eff-ed up the paint.
They turned a big paint splatter into a big paint smudge.
I asked to fix the paint splatter, they decided to sand entire clear coat and even the colour paint. They call this "repaired and ready for pickup".
I told them it's not fixed, actually worse. They told me to bring the car back next day again.

3rd repair (Sept 1):
I gave them the car at 8AM, and was told to pick it up at 6PM, the car will be repaired good.
So they had my car for 10 hours.
When I went to pick up the car, they somehow decided to repaint just the bottom of the door.
Now they created a two-toned door with a long and clear horizontal line separating top and bottom of the door.
Even the clear coat was very poorly sprayed, the surface looks and feels like it just got scratched.

Oh. and they made a new paint chip on the font door as well. Was it a bonus?
I took detailed pictures just the night before the 3rd repair. It wasn't there. Thank you for expanding the problem to the other door.

I told them to see what they have done. The owner showed up and said "We don't paint the just the bottom, we paint the whole door".
Well, I already talked to your mechanic, he told me he will just repaint the bottom. I even asked the mechanic how he's going to blend the colour, he said "Don't worry".
Don't worry? He made a nice clear separation between top and bottom of the door. Very nice two-toned door. BMW will love to charge me $$$ at the end of the lease.
The owner then told me to bring the car AGAIN next Tuesday for ANOTHER repair.

I asked to just refund the money so that I can fix it elsewhere. He said no.

Here's my experience with CARSTAR Willowdale so far.
I already contacted CARSTAR Canada several times, but they decided to just ignore me.
I will keep updating the thread with pictures as this endless repair continues.

** If anyone can recommend another auto body shop in GTA, preferably North York, that'd be appreciated. **
** How much would it cost to repaint one door? no repair, just refinish **

When they do repaint the whole panel, don't expect them remove trims and handles. Result, expect clearcoat peel.

As you said, expect to get dinged at lease return. If not by measuring paint thickness, the workmanship alone will set off red flags.

I see many more visits in your future.

I went to get a quote from Car Star in GTA before and fellt like they were totally scamming insurances. The guy is like don't worry, we'll fix everything! Anything that you want we'll just charge the insurance. Oh and the quote was thousands higher than other people. Even though I wasn't paying a penny I just went to somewhere more legit.

Dont know about north york but Indys Customs is very good. Had work done to my cobra when I had it. The owner does the paint work on nut and bolt restorations if that is any benchmark for their quality.

Had same experience with Carstar in Belleville Ont. Padded estimate..$9,445.oo to almost $15,000.00. Took to Campell's Collision Centre and things on Carstar list...nothing wrong which we already knew. Got estimate of $6200. approx
The vehicle needed some body work on passenger side due to backing into parked pick up truck in turn-a-round of driveway. I believe they are in bed with Economical Insurance who are demanding the car be wrote off no matter what. The value of this vehicle is approx $9,000. repairs approx $6200. Apparently according to Economical Insurance "Team Lead" there is not enough difference in car value and repair costs! approx $3,000.? The car has value and should not be written off..insurance keeps making stupid excuses and reasons they are not budging. They want this card bad. Professionals who work in these and related fields agree these scams are going on all the time..not all companies are like these two. These types give the honest ones bad reputations and it's no wonder they are painted with the same brush. Bad ones should be made an example of. I have talked to all agree this type of scamming goes on by some. I call it nothing short of fraud. Write to Premier Doug Ford's office letting him know of your experience and send documents. I called his office..I was told to do same. He is looking at lowering rates..hopefully if he gets enough complaints, he will change the Legislation. If not, then we should organize and protest outside of Queen's Park.Tell everyone you know and have them tell their friends. Let him know you want new rules and regulations for insurance and collision centres to protect all drivers and voters in Ontario. Did you know according to the new insurance rules...insurance companies have the right to write off your vehicle. That's why there are so many scams going on. People have to stop sitting on their asses and do something. Rates are going up again. Some people already got their increases. We can be the mouse that riared. It only takes a little time to act.

Man...I wish I saw this earlier...I went with a google review with Carstar Vaughan - (they were very positive) and now I am experiencing the exact same thing with others. Absolutely horrible service.

Carstar uses the cheapest parts possible. all in the name of profit of course.

I was in a no-fault accident. Yes, insurance only covers non-OEM parts in my situation. Well...now my front bumper is popping out and not sitting properly....and even the paint is starting to chip. I havnt been driving much (obviously due to COVID)...no accidents...we all drive on bumpy roads...I've not run over anything major...yet Carstar REFUSES to honor their warranty and said I am SOL. They took off the bumper and tried to set it back to the way it was (so it doesnt pop out) and they can't do anything about it. They just shrugged their shoulders and said thats the way it is. They then proceeded to say its my fault or something I drove over pulled the bumper out...which absolutely makes no sense at all. Before my accident with OEM parts this never happened - how can the bumper be pulled back now? Unbelievable. Now I'm escalating with the insurance company.

Stay away from Carstar.

If your insurance company is the one told you to go there (as their preferred shop), then you will have to talk to them directly.

I had a bad experience with Carstar here in Edmonton too (CARSTAR Edmonton Gateway on 7215 Gateway Blvd). They butchered my new Mazda with only 4k on it badly. Should be 5 days paint less hail repair and turned into 6 weeks of headaches. Insurance paid for everything but i am still finding stuff 2 years later...door scratched, dirt/dust everywhere and clips missing (plastic pieces are not fastened properly). When they told me the car was ready after 4 weeks the a pillar was not assembled because they did not have a part for the air bag. Literary the A-Pillar was apart when they did their "QC" before pickup. I never seen anybody come out of their shop that was older then 25, bunch of kids running around "fixing" cars. Stay away from Carstar and find a shop with qualified personnel to fix your car.

Man.........don't you do research first before sending your car off?

I took a vehicle into Carstar in London a few years ago, I wrote down the odometer reading and handed the keys over to the owner who I knew. When I got the car back there was an extra 79km on the odometer, must have been some test drive to check for squeaks and rattles.

When I brought it up with the owner he said I must have written down the odometer reading wrong. Needless to say I never went back there and tell anyone who asks to proceed with caution.

I did do my research. the reviews were mostly positive. The negative reviews were minor. this happens every where. The shop was also preferred and certified by the insurance company.

Thread is like four years old though, at that time Carstar Willowdale may have had ok reviews. Also other posters in this thread are all talking about different locations--Vaughan, Edmonton, London have all been mentioned. Carstar is a franchise AFAIK so these are all "independent shops" with the Carstar branding, logo, and warranty.

However as many have seen here the "lifetime warranty" (if they still have that) isn't really worth the paper it's written on if the work was never good to begin with.

Seems that, like Maaco, there's a lot of substandard shops out there under the Carstar brand.
No longer posting on RFD. Will answer PMs from time to time, if anyone needs help/advice/etc.

I used to live in the Yonge and Sheppard area and it changed hands to Fix Auto several years ago and then it became a TD Insurance shop. I think it has since closed down though.

Yeah looks like Google also confirms--when I search it clearly shows "permanently closed".

Edit: Oh and meta tidbit I guess--OP's pictures/review appears on Google's reviews xD
