Brave souls. I have the 2012 13" MBP and am still on the fence about Catalina. Back when Catalina first came out, I tried to upgrade but it gave me the "not enough hdd space" loop. Had to force me to restore from old backup.

I have upgraded the unit over the years you know .. new battery, maxed out the RAM @ 16GB & as of black Friday last year - a super fast 1TB SSD.

Its a nice unit after everything. Its better than my newer model Dell to be honest. Only thing thats not great is the weight .. a bit chunky by today's standards & .. yah its not retina display! But meh!

I agree with you. The biggest improvement is definitely the SSD. I swapped out the CD-rom for a second SSD to hold more the data. The iOS backup files are getting huge over the years with a few iPhone and IPad in the house.

With the 2012 model being the last one to have the Ethernet port, I am holding on to this MBP.

The biggest question is whether you have any old 32 bit applications you wish to keep using. I didn't make the jump to Catalina until I finally ponied up for the latest version of MS Office. Good news is that you currently get several series for free on Apple TV+ on Catalina.

I am still on High Sierra on my 2012 MBPs (I have a 13" and a 15"). I tried Mojave, but found the screen fonts a bit jagged so switched back. I have some installed software on my MBPs that I don't want to buy the subscription versions of Office and Adobe. I'll upgrade when I lose functionality of High Sierra.

I've been using Catalina on a mid-2014 13" Pro and an early 2015 13" Air for a while and really like it. I find it boots much faster than HS. The only 32 bit app I had was Office so I was fine with buying a license for office 2016 to get to Catalina.

A simple RAM and SSD upgrade seem to make it a very viable choice

I did run into a couple of hiccups though.

1- The app store stopped working. Some Googling revealed that the .. keychain/keyblock thingy had to be deleted and .. as I had forgotten my app store password .. I reset that as well. Once I did, and then resigned in with a new password, the appstore was OK again.

2- Other thing, for some reason my Bluetooth didnt pair anymore. Google again and deleted some bluetooth config file and repaied. OK now.

As stated earlier, its been a week. My overall "feeling" is that the laptop is running smoother.
