According to the public broadcaster, CBC News Network is not a free public service, it operates on a “paid broadcast model” and “does not receive public funding.”

Aside from news and national sporting events (such as the Olympics) does anyone really watch these shows?

I believe we should always have a publicly owned/funded broadcaster, but I've always had the impression CBC "shows" were simply made to hit Canadian-made content quotas and fill timeslots. Kinda wish CBC was more like BBC and was actually funded enough to create quality content.

It’s getting more expensive and less payoff for cbc to produce their own tv shows. CBC Gem is there to showcase the shows they do produce themselves that represent Canada and also end up buying a bunch of shows from the UK and Australia.

I used to think the shows were pretty corny but there’s actually a lot that are pretty good like Workin Moms, Pen15, Luther etc.

I use the live feature to just watch cbc as well since I don’t have cable.

If you don't like the CBC, public broadcasting, the Liberals, mainstream media, taxes, or their logo you're more than free to create a new thread elsewhere and rant about it. derailing this thread is counter-productive.

A great new CBC comedy is ‘Son of a Critch’, about a Newfoundland family and focusing on their son growing up in the 80’s. Malcolm McDowell plays the grandpa and he’s wonderful. Worth a view…

This is a good deal - not for me as you can actually skip CBC Gem's ads so I don't mind it (just very repetitive as they are likely the same every time).
There's a ton of good content on CBC Gem. I'm currently watching Travel Man - definitely recommend it.
