[Canada Computers] CC: Tomato compatible Cisco Valet M10 re-certified wireless router $16.99

Last week bought Cisco Valet M10 re-certified wireless router for $16.99 from Canada Computers, load up Tomato USB VPN firmware. Has been working great for a week.

Tempted to post earlier but was concerned about reliability. It has been running flawlessly for a week now with VoIP and Diablo 3 prioritized with QoS.

All M10 I saw in store are V1.0 with serial number start with CVJ0. If you see CVJ1, don't buy, they are V2.0. There is no compatible tomato yet, maybe DD-WRT.

M10 v1 has the same hardware as WRT160N v3. It has single band wireless N, 100m switch. But this is not a concern for most of people because all smartphone and pads only support N on 2.4GHz,laptop could use 5GHz if forced though.

Tomato firmware, goto http://tomatousb.org/download, download Kernel 2.6 (experimental) for MIPSR2 Routers - NoUSB VPN.

Upgrade is super easy. Rename the extension of firmware file from .trx to .bin, upgrade directly from stock Cisco Web GUI.

M10 also comes with a USB Easy Setup key, which is basically a 1GB flash drive.

I have been on RFD for years. This is my first post. Hope it is a good find. I am going to buy a second one as backup.

Wow seems like a hot price for a custom firmware capable N router. Perhaps it's time i upgraded from wrt54gl?

Does tomato do openvpn yet?

Not true. I know some phones that support 5Ghz.

Got this router brand-new for $19.99 at NCIX 3 weeks ago. I installed DD-WRT Build 18946 but was having dropping issues. I installed an older build, 18024, after a suggestion from a poster at the DD-WRT forum and and it has worked flawlessly since. Great budget router.

DD-WRT Build 18024: ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer ... ni_m10.bin

NCIX is now selling it brand-new for $24.99: http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=54810 ... re=Linksys

+1 bump for a solid router on 3rd party firmware. Running DD-WRT on it for now, will switch to Tomato. Just replaced against WNR2000v2. This has better range.

Really? I'm using WNR2000 V2 + DD-WRT too. It works well but I do not satisfied with the signal.

It is a good price, so thanks.

Otherwise, for me personally, the dealbreaker is
Ethernet ports speed: 4 x 10/100

I move a lot of data between my desktop and the home server, so 100 Mb is not enough.
I had to upgrade to a gigabit router (roughly 60-70 MB per second on a 10/100/1000 vs. 10-11 MB per sec on a 10/100)

OP, TomatoUSB or TeddyBear Mod hasn't been updated in a while where as Tomato Firmware has progressed a lot. Three versions that get regular updates are:
1. Shibby's Tomato Mod (Captive Portal & Torrent client)
2. Toastman Tomato Mod (Excellent for QoS builds)
3. Teaman Tomato Mod (Excellent for 4MB Flash)

I personally use Teaman and Shibby's Mod but all the Mods come in various flavors so you essentially get more of the same.

TomatoUSB has always done OpenVPN. I've been running OpenVPN for over three years now. Teaman's Mod has PPTP server as well. I'm running both. Never had a problem.

for this price, it makes for a wonderful wireless repeater... to me that alone is worth it. the 100mb switch is just a bonus imo.

Thanks for sharing this. I tried Toastman's MOD but reverted back to the original one which I found to be bit faster and responsive (httpd interface). Then again, M16 doesn't have USB nor gigabit. What I fear with most updated firmwares is the fact that most of them aren't as reliable due to the constant updates and tweaks (one thing breaks, while others get fixed). That's been my turn off from my DD-WRT days.

I felt that I was going into the same with the latest toastman release where people talked about dnsmasq issues etc (which I did have but resolved through multiple resets). The original tomatousb is reliable as hell and everything works on the 1.28 beta on the first try. None the less the base code for all of tomato is still stuck at 1.28? Correct? Rest are just minor mods.

Are you running Teaman on it? Which version would you recommend.
