Cheap mobile phone plan to keep number active

If I will be leaving the country for an extended period of time but do not want to lose my phone number, what would be the best way to keep that number under my ownership but also keeping costs down?

Right now I am with Zoomer and paying nearly $40 a month.

The phone wouldn't be used at all so i wouldn't need any data plan, sms or even many (or any) minutes. I imagine that would be some sort of Pay-As-You-Go-Plan. Anyone have any suggestions?

Number Barn is US$5 fee and then US$2/month. https://www.numberbarn.com/number-parking

Porting to Forgo for $25 is really handy, because you can continue to receive and make calls from that number to any Canadian number for free using the Fongo app, anywhere in the world so long as you have a wifi or data connection.

i'd definitely go for voip.ms

my DID costs me 0.80$ a month + 0.009$ a minute (yes, 9/10ths of a cent per minute)

they had a free port-in promo a while ago, i think its still going on

Ask them to temporarily pause / suspend the service because you're going away.

In your experience is Numberbarn reliable?

For $2/month with unlimited texting it could a good alternative to Fongo/Textnow/voip.ms.

+1

And as a bonus you can continue to use the number to make/receive calls to/from Canadian numbers from where ever you are as long as you have Internet access. You can also get notified by email of any messages left on voicemail. All for that $25 with no expiry.

Never used it. But it’s a popular service that’s been around a long time so I thought I’d throw it out there.

another option if you don't want to go the voip route and stick to traditional cell carrier is Freedom's $99/year talk & txt prepaid plan...............

The one thing with porting to voip - there may be potential complications or headaches if you decide to port back to traditional cell carrier - a good example is this fellow RFDer who ported back from voip to traditional cell.

For some reason, some websites still thought it was still a VoIP number and they ran into issues with 2factor authentication and account recovery (i.e. Uber, Uber Eats, Yahoo, etc). Not sure if they ever got it resolved? Looks like some national DB needed to be updated. Thinking it would get resolved eventually but might be a bit frustrating

The above is most likely the exception (not the rule) but just something to consider......

Hello, I'm wondering if anyone had success bringing a phone number INTO Zoomer Wireless from Numberbarn. Asking because I just spoke to ZOomer and they said that they don't accept port-ins from Numberbarn. We were planning to use it to park our Canadian cell phone for several months and then bring it back. Numberbarn offers a forwarding option which works perfectly for us, but Zoomer does not.

Another vote for VOIP.ms - very configurable (fwd to multiple numbers, voice mail, use on different devices...) - Very cheap!

Oh and EXCELLENT customer service! OMG can't tell you how many stupid mistakes I did and they helped me everytime (and spend a lot of time). I only used online chat.

I will say wait for Black Friday. I did it and there were bonus referral bonuses as well as free port, etc. Feel free to Pm me if you ahve any specific Question. wE have a really good thread here on RFD as well for help.
