Cheaper House Plants - where in Ontario?

Hi all,

since all these (home depot) garden centers buy their plants instead of growing em, is there a good whole sale plant nursery within driving distance from Toronto? What about good farmer’s markets?

Thanks!

House Plants...

As in indoors ?

Or are you talking Outdoor garden plants, flowers, shrubs etc that we are now beginning to see in the local garden centres like the ones attached to Big Box Stores (Walmart, Home Depot, Grocery Stores etc)

Need clarification, cuz they are 2 different things / markets

You can get houseplants wholesale at Toronto food terminal, but you need a registered business. And last I heard it is $250 yearly fee.

Since we're on RFD.... if you want cheap indoor plants you need to learn with ones can be propagated from cuttings, or divided from existing ones. Many people that have plants are pretty happy to share.

This

Most indoor houseplants are grown in the USA in Greenhouse Nurseries, and then shipped to Canada ... and to survive the trip, they are coming here more during the Summer than Winter. So combine both of those elements, and that is WHY they are more expensive than outdoor garden plants, a lot of which are grown here in Canada.

If you want cheaper houseplants, then your best bet is to look to swap meets for gardeners, or investigate joining your local Gardening / Horticulture Club, and raise your own

Otherwise, it’s hard to find bargains at Garden Centres or Big Box Stores.

And those that do exist ... like Indoor / Outdoor Tropicals in the Summer Months (Clearance at $ 9.99) are plants that are at the end of season sale here, and have a poor chance of surviving indoors over the Winter without A LOT OF TLC ... like you need a mega sunny spot, or a grow light.

PS... a lot of public spaces where you seen nice indoor plants, they are actually fakes / artificial
As fakes have gotten better looking, and plant servicing costs have gotten higher... more & more the go to choice is artificial
But then, fakes ... especially good looking ones, aren’t cheap either
