Checking Gas meter - destroyed plants

I know I'm going to come accross like I'm whining, but damn... so pissed off right right now.

Apparently the person hired by Uniongas to do their house to house monthly readings on gas meters walked right through my yard and trampled a few of my boxwoods. I know it's them because I spotted them yesterday, and today I can see the footprints in the snow walking from house to house through the front yards (and not going back to use the sidewalks).

The asshole stepped right on two of my boxwoods (planted last year in May). I dont suppose anyone has had a similar situation? I know it's only $40 of damage, but still very upset right now.

do you know when they come? you can ask them next time to avoid trampling your foliage and if it happens again, report them.

You might be able to read your own meter and call it in and you wouldn't need to worry any more.

I sympathize, but first, I need to ask, where are your boxwood planted in relationship to the gas meter?

We talking about the arse trampling through the front yard not caring where things are, or a garden bed almost adjacent to the meter?

With the snow they may not be able to see them.
If you clear a path in the snow, they will follow it.
Also self report your meter (you can sign up for a reminder).
If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

Probably couldn’t see them with the amount of snow. Easy solution is self report your reading.

Even if you self report do they actually skip your house when they go around? I thought the self report was just to get a more accurate bill every other month when they don’t come by to verify.

Garden bed with boxwoods is in the front of the yard near the front walkway to the front door. Gas meter is all the way at the side of the house.

There is some snow on top, but you can clearly see the top of the boxwoods. I made sure not to bury them with snow when shoveling the front walkway.

That is why I always DIG a path in the snow to my gas meter ...

This. Even if you self report they still go door to door and do a reading bimonthly. It just gives you a more accurate read on the months they don't go out to read.

Glad to know I wasn’t making that up. I was pretty sure that was how it went but couldn’t recall why I thought that.

If I understand correctly every other month they don’t scan and they just make an educated guess based on past usage, then the next month they scan and adjust that bill based on whether they over or under billed the previous month.

I'm waiting for the people to walk on my spot lights buried under the snow still. I should turn them on so the snow melts away from around them at least, would have a better chance. They walked over them past two years cutting across our lawn :/

i feel your pain. boxwoods are my favourite shrubs especially for creating a hedge. one winter, i had every other one (from my hedge) die after having growing them for 4 to 5 years. They are slow growers so growing them to the size i had took very long. Replacing them might have cost me 100 each.

He shouldn't be walking across your yard. I don't even have a sidewalk and the guy who comes here walks up the driveway, reads the meter, then back down the driveway to the other house without going across any yard. Not sure why all the downvotes. This is a valid complaint.

Just dig a path. It's not difficult. Then your problem is solved. I do it every winter since I don't like people trampling on my garden either.

Doesnt solve my issue though. Unless I'm digging a path from the neighbours gas line and path in my front yard that goes around my plants, it doesnt help. In your second picture, it looks like you have some plants to the left of that path you dug. Imagine your neighbour was to the left of those plants and the meter reading idiot going straight through your plants to get to that path you dug out.

Then for the coming autumn ... put in those dollar store reflective stakes ... then rope off the area with YELLOW CAUTION TAPE. Nothing you can do at this point.

I got sick n tired of the kids playing on the electrical box in winter and pushing the snow down onto my driveway ... I ended up putting the stakes in and roping it ... ended up not needing it because the snow piled up way too high for them to climb on.

It's simple to come up with ways to deter things from happening. There are always options to improvise.
