Testing on this was done by a korean magazine. Most of the japanese sun screens lie about the protection they give including this one unfortunately. Its still better than north american sun screens though because for some reason we're in the stone age and still use cancer causing chemicals.

Almost every sunscreen overstated their protection except for like 1 or 2 obscure outliers that weren't possible to get outside of using a Japanese reshipping service.

So overstating is more or less par for the course in the industry.

My first hand experience with this Biore sunscreen has been fantastic. Feels like nothing and I have not had a sunburn/tan since using it. The kicker is I can’t even read any of the labels/instructions nor determine what the equivalent SPF is so that’s more than good enough for me.

It's definitely not a Japanese thing. There was a whole blowup with Korean sunscreens a while back.

Last I saw, Biore met what was advertised but sunscreens go through a lot of reformulations or even depending on the country. I know there is a Chinese export-only variant of Biore Watery Essence with a lower (but advertised) SPF grading.

To note, there's no real dispute with physical sunscreens on their effectiveness but people lean towards chemical sunscreens due to their easy application. And even a lower than advertised sunscreen is better than no sunscreen.

Likely referring to avobenzone and oxybenzone, due to their relation to benzene. While the claims are true, the dose is what matters, and argument is that the dose in sunscreen is so low, it's a non-concern.

There are many sunscreens without those ingredients, and cancer from the sun should be the biggest concern anyway.

I purchased from Amazon japan recently. I found the prices to not be too high (~$8-10/bottle) and if you’re buying in bulk you can minimize the cost of shipping. I go though quite a bit of the Biore Sunscreen so I’m fine with buying 5+ bottles at a time

You have the Amazon link? I was looking too and the price went up considerably since I last purchase. I remember the price was like 768 yen per 1.7x tube.

Ya I just checked and looks like the price has gone up a lot! I recently had a layover in Japan so I was able to purchase a few bottles at the airport at this price. Hopefully the price on Amazon JP drops again in a few months.
