Compact SUV with bigger engine?

So my wife's '07 Impreza is starting to have gasket issues. She was planning on changing cars in 2 years anyways, so we're trying to see if there any good deals on compact SUVs and just change now instead of fixing it. However, most compact SUVs in our budget (~$35k) have pretty low output engines. The ones we're looking at are the Subaru Forester 2.0XT Touring and VW Tiguan Special Edition. Ford Escape with the 2.0L Turbo and Kia Sportage SX I think are a little out of my budget. Any other suggestions?

Forester 2.0XT is nice. You can't go wrong with it. The Nissan Murano has the 3.5L V6 (but if you want AWD, it starts at $37k).

BMW X1 with a twin turbo 300hp engine.

Or the bionic cheetah. Infiniti small suv's have very powerful engines.

Almost everything $35k or less will have a low output engine. Unless you buy a sporty car like a Genesis, Mustang, Camaro etc...
This is another case of "what you're willing to pay, doesn't match your expectations of reality".

^I'm looking for 200hp+ only (not 300hp) which I think is reasonable for 35k. Most of the other compact SUVs i've looked at only have 160-170hp

Sorento. It's the smallest (187 inches) reasonable crossover with a V6 that can tow 5000 pounds.

I have been looking for a small practical vehicle that can tow 5000 pounds and have yet to find anything better than the Sorento in this regard.

Nissan Juke. Cheap, got the power, and looks funky. Only downside is the cheap plastic interior.

You can also consider the Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen. Not a SUV but much better than the Tiguan for sure.

35k for a compact SUV that has over 200hp?

Unicorn? All the suggestions here are way over 35k.

You might be able to pull off a base trim V6 Cherokee for under 35k with all the year end discount, 270 HP ain't shabby.

So Cherokee, more HP, less torque, runs regular fuel instead of premium. Not sure if there are anything else since most compact SUV only has one engine options now. Jeep reliability isn't he best, but probably on par with VW.
