Computer replacement due to flood

Hello there,

Unfortunately I had a flood in my home and have lost my so much computer, iPad etc included. I’m barely functioning but I’m looking to purchase a new laptop. The brand I had was Dell and it was nothing but H*ll. The computer is for personal and business use. I would 17”screen, 16GB(if possible) and my budget is $1100. I know it’s cheap but have so many other things to buy. Costco has a great return policy should anything happen but I am open to buying from Best Buy and Lenovo, directly any help you can provide would be amazing. Thank you so much.

1100$ is alot of room to work with for a laptop...
Unless you're targeting ultra slim, dual screens or some other niche.

What's your use case? Doesn't sound like you're gaming. Do you do any professional work that will require a powerful cpu?

At that price, you can get an M1 Macbook

For a laptop, look at the screen size, build quality, weight, battery life etc. Specs are more or less the same across models and would hardly make any difference in office use.

The thing that will definitely make a difference is having an SSD. That really makes things snappy.

To test build quality, hold it from a corner near the trackpad, with the screen open. Low quality ones will start making noises & flexing

Hello there. Yes the person who came to assess the electronics damage took the hardware out so I’ll need to get it transferred. I was thinking Costco as they offer extended warranty for the two years. There seems to be more online than in store. I only see one within my price range only. Image

Hey there thanks a lot for the reply everyone is telling me to stay away from a MacBook because I have a Apple phone and Apple IPad so I’m confused.
Ok This is what I’m finding is all the specs are pretty much the same and I’m only seeing much of a difference in screen size and GB so I’ll definitely take a look at what you are saying. Have you ever bought comp from Costco ?

MacOS and Windows are completely different OS. No need to argue which one is better (most people have an opinion) but you need to decide which one you want based on your preferences and applications that you use. If you want to stay with Windows, don't go for a Mac.
Try not! Do or do not, there is no try...

Hey there. I decided I’m going to buy a Mac book. With $1000+ budget could you let me know your reco. Apple store or Costco. I see Costco is selling with AppleCare plan as well. Any advise would be appreciated with regards to specs. If doing a small biz and pleasure is 8gb enough. Someone said to get a tierabyte (spelling). Thank you.

I think the M1 Air is perfect for most people. Plus it'll work a lot better with your iPad & iPhone. Go for the lowest spec, it'll be more than enough. Even for some gaming

The storage is non-upgradeable though, so that is one thing to look for. The RAM is also not upgrade-able but 8GB is more than enough for most things.

EDIT: You can buy it from anywhere. Apple service is top notch and they don't care about purchase location. AppleCare can be worth it, if something fails. I normally buy it with my Apple Laptops and often end up using it. Though for the last 2 MBPs I had, the Apple Service Programs (recalls) were more than enough, and the AppleCare expired without any issues being covered under it

Hello. Thank you so much for the advice. I appreciate it so much. I’ll be heading tomorrow to purchase. Im getting the MacBook M1 Air, 8 gb. Yes I read about not being able to upgrade the memory and some people
Finding that a problem. I guess if anything I can always get an external hard drive but I don’t know if I’ll even need anything like that. I’m excited. Thank you. Had you not mentioned about considering the MacBook I would not have even have thought it through just based on all the negative things people had said to me about it and how I’m going to regret. Face With Rolling Eyes…I appreciate the support. 🥰

External HDDs are a headache. I would suggest 8GB RAM & 512GB Storage. Or maybe look at your current laptop to see how much is used. 512GB won't store a lot of movies, but should be more than enough for Docs, apps, photos, few movies with plenty to spare

Now it is a little different from Windows, but in 6 months, most people are used to it
