Computer upgrade suggestions

I'm upgrading my pc that is currently used for these main things, Blue Iris DVR (running 24/7), AutoCAD, gaming, surfing.

Currently it has:
- i-7 6700 processor
- 16 gigs of ram
-Asus mboard
-EVGA 3080 ultra gaming video card
-Several SATA drives
-1 NVME drive

I want to replace the motherboard, CPU, and ram and keep the rest to build around the video card and have it for the next 5-7 years. Right now its maxing out CPU usage with certain games and apps with the DVR running in the background and ram is getting up over 70% or more used.

I was considering just going to an AMD 5900x as it seems like it might be one of the best options for the multitasking I do along with a bit of future proofing.....

Any suggestions on a combination of motherboard/ram/processor would be appreciated.

Getting the top of the line CPU will always do the trick. Rumor has it Intel 12th gen will shake things up and will be released later this year? Also note that the Current Ryzen generation will most likely be the end of the AM4 platform so there will most likely be no upgrade path after the R9 5900/5950 CPU.

Getting full usage is fine, as long as nothing lags. Ride it out

I wasn't aware that AM4 was at the end of its life, I haven't had an AMD setup in forever.... I'll have to research the new intel offerings and see what is going on there, possibly worth a wait if its not too long, although I'd like to be on something newer by Sept.

With the DVR and several Firefox tabs, I am starting to notice some major lag, stuttering and freezing with CAD or GEMs modelling anything especially in 3D. I think its being pushed too far. Its completely fine for the gaming side of things right now.

You can always wait for the new AM5 platform to come out this year before you decide. Should shake things up some more!

The previous reply got me thinking about that as well, but then they were talking about possibly early 2022... Decisions decisions. Also, wouldn't the price point be considerably higher than the AM4 high end now. I am also concerned that even if it did release say in October or November, availability would be nil.

How much CPU and memory is BI using now? How many cameras? Are you using direct to disk and using Intel quicksync? What version of BI are you using?

I have 8 cameras recording 24/7 using an i5-4590 with 4gb of memory and it uses less than 10% cpu.

BI should not be choking your setup unless BI s misconfigured or your hardware does not support hardware acceleration, though I expect your Asus mb to have Intel graphics onboard which supports quicksync.

I'd have to agree with coilz on this one, your current system is good enough to hold out for ~6 months for Intel's next generation to arrive. Intel's 12th gen brings a new socket, DDR5, PCIe 5.0, and a completely new architecture (borrowing the performance core + efficiency core setup found in some mobile SoCs). And Zen 4 details are largely non-existent right now, but it'll be packing DDR5 support so it's almost certainly going to have a new socket as well.

So yeah, while any high end chip you buy today will still be useful in 5-7 years, just know that the current platforms are dead ends as far as upgradability goes.

I’m going to disagree with everyone here. There is ALWAYS something better on the horizon. Also, who knows how easy it will be to buy right at launch. It took me a month to find a 5800x back in November last year and I paid $629. Now you can get the chip $100 cheaper and you can get a 5900x period. And as for intel, they’ve been a sinking ship for a while. Who knows if the new chips are even going to be that great. I’d just buy the 5900x now and enjoy being able to run that 3080 to its limit instead of bottenecking it for another 6 months.

You don't really need to upgrade, seems like you just have something misconfigured.

Gaming on a BI box seems like a bad idea overall, so if you are building a new system for gaming your old system is perfectly fine to be used as a detected BI box as it does not need the 3080. Intel quicksync will work just fine even with allot of cameras.

Make sure to use hardware acceleration and substreams.
