Concerned about bringing my bike over the US border.

My friend and I are driving to the US with our bikes. We're taking separate vehicles, but he will carry mine in his SUV. We will not cross the border together.

Will there be issues when the border guards (both going and returning) see a like-new expensive bike in his SUV? I do not have a receipt for it.

I'm concerned they will think he bought it in the US and try to charge duty/taxes.

What can I do to prove it originated in Canada?

Go register the item with Canadian Customs... You'll need the Serial Number

As for your buddy taking it back & forth it is do-able with Explanation to the Border Guard. But it would be easier if you guys were travelling together, or at least in separate vehicles crossing together at the same time (your car in line / your declaration first)

Many years ago I stopped at the CBSA office just *before* crossing the border. I had the year , make, model and serial number of the bike. I was issued a wallet card with the above info

When I returned from the US, sure enough the CBSA guy asked me for the card. No problem
