Confused with Fuel & Turbo...

My 2022 VW Golf R coming in June, ordered it last October.

First purchased with turbo. I keep reading follow your owner's manual but quick Google says otherwise.

Turbocharged engines run best when fueled with high octane fuel, which is found in premium gas.

Since many vehicles are made to run normally with regular gas, premium gas isn’t a requirement, but it may help to better optimize your vehicle’s performance.

If you drive like grandma then use regular unleaded, if you drive like Hamilton then premium unleaded.

Follow whats inside the fuel door. I think it takes 91.

Exactly. What is recommended and required are two different things.

Do what the cap say. 87 would work and you'll save $8-$10 per tank.

But 91 should get you a bit more mileage due to absence of ethanol (if you can find ethanol free premium in your area). So the differential is probably less than that.

It will likely say 91 Recommended but may also say 87 is acceptable in the owners manual. That being said you will have more power with 91 Octane and the car will run better. The mk7 R is 91 Required (in a pinch you can run lower octane but not regularly)

Just because it's a turbo doesn't mean it requires premium just like if it's a NA doesn't mean it doesn't.

Your avg civic or Hyundai has a Turbo nowadays. No way the avg Civic owner with a 1.5T or a Hyundai 1.6T is running premium.

Meanwhile NAs with a 100hp/L ratio require premium. FRS, BRZ, Prelude, K20 Civic Si and RSX, etc.

Buy Golf R, shouldn’t be a budget baller. Use 91 Shell V power, all gasoline and no ethanol.

Not questioning what grade to use. I bolded the article I copied from Google how regular can be used but turbo performs better with premium.

Should have thought about this before purchase.

Why would you buy a high performance turbo 4 (315hp from a 2.0l is 150hp+/l) and kill the performance by putting crappy gas in it, makes no sense. I say this as an owner of the previous generation. Might as well just buy the vanilla golf.

This is what happens when features are marketed above mechanics. I got an X2 as a rental and had to dig through 14 pages of styling, cupholders, lighting, entertainment before getting to the engine specs on the BMW site. VW used this to their advantage with the Alltrack where all you pay for over a regular 4motion wagon is the badge and some plastic for the body kit.

96 months to pay a car is another absurd financial decision but not the topic of this thread. Don't forget to budget for out of warranty repairs and an R has a lot of fancy things that are expensive to fix. Don't cheap out on the regular maintenance!

For what it's worth, Mk 8 R specifies 91 minimum.

As to the original question, there shouldn't be anything confusing unless you just don't understand what octane represents. There is no direct connection between the engine aspiration and octane. It's just that the turbo engines are often calibrated to a higher state of tune and are able to take advantage of the octane.

The TLDR is don't overthink it and just run the specified octane for the vehicle.

Damn 96 months, VW taking another play from Hyundai.

I think they got confused by information from the regular Golf and GTI, where it can run on 87.

The cost of fuel is the least of your worries.
