Didn't have a K Cup machine, planning to cut the cup and put grinds into my cheap 20 dollar coffee machine.

Now I won another weekly prize:

You've won a Keurig® K-Supreme PlusTM Smart Single Serve Coffee Maker.

Purolator just dropped mine off at the front door. No signature or anything required.
Congrats! I won one and received it today as well! (Thanks for all the contests that you share, BTW!)
P.S. I'm wondering what brand/company made the snowboard? Do you know?

LOL I was wondering if I should sell the 30 pack I won on a local resell site or use the grounds in my daily pour over. I didn't think anyone else did this sort of thing Face With Tears Of Joy

Now that I've won the Keurig, great way to use the cups but wondering where in the world I'll put it on my limited counter space. I've read great reviews and would love to be able to use it.

I don't have a clue either.
Aside from taking it out of the cardboard, mine is still left bubble wrapped, so I haven't really examined it at all.

Mine is out of the bubble wrap and I examined every inch and couldn't identify any manufacturing information.

Its a "made in China" board, there is no real brand associated with it. I've won a few of these over the years.

I am not sure if this is the right location to post.
I won a ROG Strix Scar 15 Asus laptop.
I had to fill out a W-8Ben form. I know that things can get complicated when shipping from the states to Canada. I just received a $500 US invoice from their accounting department. Everything looks legit, email addresses, but having to pay $500 US to get my prize seems a bit shady.
Am I being scammed here?
Thanks in advance.

Definitely get in touch with whoever contacted you about the win, forward the invoice, explain the situation and cc the accounting dept that sent you the invoice. Escalate as needed.

Last year I won a laptop and while I didn't get an invoice from the company, I did get an invoice from the courier expecting me to pay several hundred bucks in customs brokerage fees and duty on it. I sent that to the contact I had from the contest and they sorted it out (paid it on their end). You shouldn't have to pay for a win.

In theory, I agree, and it doesn't hurt to follow up with the contest administrator if you wind up getting a UPS/FedEx bill. That being said, there are certainly some contests where the rules explicitly state that any taxes, duties (and sometimes the shipping cost itself) that are levied as a result of the prize having to be shipped outside the U.S. are the sole responsibility of the contest winner.

Thank you everyone who responded.

The response I received from the contest coordinator is: The US has certain tax regulations and because the office is located in the US and for a large price prize a US 30% foreign tax withholding will be charged.

Sigh! This is a bit of a disappointment. Not sure I want to pay all this money for my prize.

Does anyone know if its possible to claim this money back? I know with casino/lottery winnings you can claim the tax on the winnings. Does this work on contest wins to?

If I googled the right Asus laptop, it could really be worth asking your friends and family if they'd want a $3000 laptop for $500. I know I wouldn't pass up on that offer! Sorry, can't answer on the claiming tax part though.

Some information on this site, which seems pretty thorough:
If you are a Canadian resident and have had 30% tax withheld from winnings from a contest, according to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), you cannot recover this money.

If you are a Canadian resident and have had 30% tax withheld from lottery or gambling winnings in the US, some or all of the tax can be recovered if

  • you also have US gambling losses to offset some or all of the winnings, or
  • tax was withheld from winnings from blackjack, baccarat, craps, roulette or big-6 wheel

I won a gaming laptop worth $2000 quite a few years back. Did not fill out a W8Ben form, did not pay any duties but did have to get a notary to fill out a form which cost $30. Also the company sent the laptop from Florida as A GIFT. Perhaps that was the difference in why I did not pay any duty, can't say for sure. Hope you figure this out.

Think it happened once or twice where a company shipped something and purolator/fedex sent bill for inspections or delivery or something. Don’t know if it’s a rule, but I thought that if contest is open to Canada that the same rules would pertain (ie. we don’t pay for shipping). Luckily the company (Dell I believe) must have paid the bill after sending it to them. However, they have an office in Canada so perhaps it was less complicated as I don’t recall ever having to complete a W form.

There was one prize I declined either because I didn’t want to put up with the US taxes at the time or I couldn’t go. Since then, I try to avoid contests based out of the US unless it’s really big companies or a huge prize for a few reasons: chances of winning are lower, highly unlikely I’d answer international phone # and I don’t like the thought of 30% tax unless it’s something I really want like $ or a car Smiling Face With Open Mouth And Tightly-closed Eyes
