It kinda seems like it does not expire, like it's always there

Isn't the groupon deal that comes around every couple months a better deal ?

Yes. I got a $40 coupon + $10 shop card for a new Gold membership ($60 + tax) about 2 weeks ago. It was a promo from mailer, not sure if thats what you're refereing to though.

It is only showing a $0.01 discount for me. I have no Costco membership. Strange.

That means the coupon was applied. You get a coupon not price reduction.

A Canadian federal or provincial government-issued ID must be presented to a warehouse Membership Counter when applying for a Costco membership.

Since Costco has self-service checkouts now, has anyone ever had their membership photo checked when using them?

I've used them maybe 10 times and never had anyone ask to verify my picture. If they have cameras (a la Walmart self checkout) so that a computer or someone in a back room can do the comparison, I haven't noticed them.

In store, it's $25 Costco.ca coupon for the referer + $25 Costco.ca coupon for the new member.

Plus a lame pizza

Not at the self checkout but they do look at your picture when you enter Costco.

They can, but I haven't seen them do that to anyone in years.

With self checkout maybe they'll need to ramp up on that again.

They'll have a hard time enforcing their policy of not allowing non-members to pay when they are with a member. That I see them do all the time, but it'll be tricky to enforce at self checkouts.
