So for anyone who is torn between this HP Envy x360 (Ryzen 5) at $899.99 vs the HP Envy x360 (Ryzen 7) at $1099.99, here are my findings after ordering both:

Pure spec difference:
4500U vs 4700U
512GB vs 1TB
4-cell, 55.67Wh Battery vs 3-cell, 51Wh Battery
USB-C at 5Gbps vs USB-C at 10 Gbps
Slightly bigger but thinner 35.9x24.6x1.72 vs 35.8x23.0x1.89 probably due to the bigger battery?
Heavier 4.53lbs vs 4.42lbs probably due to the bigger battery?
No USB-C hub vs USB-C hub included
2 speaker B&O vs 3 speaker B&O
Different port arrangements, power button, laptop kill switch, and fingerprint reader positioning

After using the two, here are my thoughts:
  • The Ryzen 5 model appears to be using last year's body/chassis. The bottom bezel on the Ryzen 5 model is huge, which makes the laptop and the screen much larger than the Ryzen 7 model. The Ryzen 7 model appears to be using a newly designed body/chassis. The exhaust vents are on the back of the laptop on the Ryzen 7 model vs on the side on the Ryzen 5 model and the ports are laid out differently. Because of the new design, the USB A port on the left hand side of the Ryzen 7 model uses this flip cover design where you need to push it down before you can insert your USB device/cable. The USB A port on the right hand side of the Ryzen 7 model is normal.
  • The trackpad on the Ryzen 5 feels cheaper and clickier and is also MUCH smaller than on the Ryzen 7 model. The trackpad on the Ryzen 7 model feels more professional... no laptop will ever get close to Apple trackpad territory, but the Ryzen 7 model is a strong contender in the PC world and probably comes as close as you can to Apple's glass trackpad.
  • The speakers on the Ryzen 7 model absolutely destroy the Ryzen 5 model... even after adjusting for EQ.
  • The stylus that comes with the Ryzen 5 model is an older stylus that runs on AAAA batteries. The stylus that comes with the Ryzen 7 model is slightly longer and has an internal battery that is charged via a USB C cable and feels much better in my hand because it has a flat edge on one side of the stylus (like the Apple Pencil 2).
  • So for $200 more, I will definitely be keeping the Ryzen 7 model. Better CPU, graphics, more storage space, better speakers, better stylus, and a sleeker laptop profile. The Ryzen 5 model is going back to Costco.
There are my 2 cents for those that are debating between these two laptops.
If you can find it in stock, the Ryzen 7 model is great value, highly recommended, and is my choice between the two. Stock appears to be replenishing periodically.
Congratulations!

Anybody who has bought this laptop, hows the brightness as I see it is only 250 nits. I dont understand HP in 2020 giving 250 nits display even my chinese laptop from 2016 has 300 nits display.

Back in stock (57 units). Ordered one, was on the fence initially but realized that the Costco return/warranty factor was better than other available options.

Has anyone upgraded the RAM? Did you notice a difference?

The brightness is fine, but the panel colour accuracy is mediocre. This coming from the 4500U variant in the other thread (250nits - 72% sRGB). I have a colour calibration profile in the other thread available.
I am not sure if they use the same panel as this is the refreshed chassis. I am inclined to believe they use the same 250nits panel.

There are 2 panels:
250nit 1080p - 72% sRGB
400nit 1080p - 99% sRGB

In for one, might order some RAM once I get my package in. Hoping Ubuntu runs well on this thing too

Thanks for the tip, I was waiting for this. I ordered one and I'll compare it with the 4500 model but I'm pretty sure I'll keep this one for an extra $200...

How is this U chip compared to one of the H chips, say in the $799 HP gaming laptop at Best Buy?

It's tempting but I struggle to think what I would actually use this for. It's not a desktop replacement for gaming, since the gpu isn't nearly good enough. And it's not good for work or school, since it's 4.4 pounds, which is a brick for commuting by today's standards. If this were 2 pounds lighter, I'd probably bite.

Asus has a 14"er that's less than 2.5 pounds also.
