Wait for clearance pricing. The Klipsch 5.1.4 for $500 a few months ago was hot.

Klipsch has really high msrp, but I have no idea if the costco price price is great but if its kinda close to msrp I'd avoid.

Up firing garbage. Get proper Atmos height speakers instead.

I've always thought the same, but haven't verified. I've got a 7.1 surround system with an Atmos Onkyo receiver, and have been thinking to do a proper Atmos setup (even though it currently sounds great). I just don't really wanna bother running wires through my finished popcorn ceilings to get er done lol.

My thought is that old school 7.1 > Atmos upfiring. But obviously proper Atmos setup trumps all.

getting a proper receiver is also expensive for an Atmos setup. I want one and need ideas.

Depends on the system and the room.

I went from a HT Atmos receiver with SVS prime elevations mounted to my ceiling, to a Sony HT-A9 with four up firing speakers and I like the Sony system better for spatial sound.

For reference, the speaker set on clearance was $500 and the wireless sub was $300

I'm a fan of any system like this as long as you can replace the sub.
Price does seem high for now.

I disagree with the above and "I" believe a 5.1.2 system even up firing is better than a 7.1 system.
THX wrote a lot about it. Human ears have a hard time with sound directly behind us so 6.1 and 7.1 pretty much sound the same. With just one sweet spot seat a 5.1 system does a good job with a phantom center for the rear.

Depends on your price range. I am a fan of Anthem receivers but they are not cheap.

I always love elitism in any threads concerning audio equipment. Never gets old.

Thats prob unrealistic for the average person. I have a Denon 3600 powering B&W 600 series and its more than adequate in my opinion.

$500 is prob the minimum for any Atmos receiver, closer to 1K or more for something with better specs.

Klipsch markup is massive, always seem to be 50% off at retailers. Not a huge polk fan, but they offer quite a range in prices. Kef uni-q perhaps. A bit harder to get some brands (Triangle, Elac, monitor, etc) unless you want to stick withLondon Drugs/BestBuy/Visions etc.

To be fair, that is a different speaker set, more budget one

Upfiring is still way better than not having atmos. Most people arent gonna bother setting up height speakers.

it has its place. not everyone wants to run wires through the attic or go through their ceiling. i've got upfiring atmos and while it's not as good as ceiling mounted, there is a substantial difference vs. without it.

you can hear height effects some of the time, but mostly, the soundstage is much improved vs. traditional 5.1 setup.

the most recent movie that actually wow'd me was prey. the height effects were amazing.

Since the member didn't mention a price range, I mentioned Anthem because it's the receiver brand I'm very familiar with and I've been using them for years.

I always advise people to get what pleases them since they are the ones who will be using it.

I was quoted 1k for the amp and 3k for speakers. not that it wasn't in my budget, but I couldn't justify this price tag for 2 more speakers.
