[Costco] Large watermelons on sale at Costco, $4.99

Went to the Costco at woodbine and 407 today and saw the watermelons for $4.99. Not sure if it’s the new regular price, I bought these for $8.99 last month.

These are big watemelons, I’d say 10+ pounds. Costco watermelons are nice and sweet. They had a lot left, probably about 4 big skids. They were locate right before the frozen section in the back.

I have seen this price for at least three weeks in Richmond hill/Markham area
1. Buy cheap, buy twice
2. Don’t buy because it’s cheap. Buy it when needed or it brings convenience/happiness/better quality in life
3. Buy now think (regret/return) later
4. If the gut says don’t tell your lady, don’t!

I find that they're not as tasty nowadays. Maybe a little stale.

Smacking a watermelon does nothing. They will all sound the same.

You want a good size, dark green with a large yellow spot.

Watermelons are like $2.88 (No Frills, Food basics) - $4.99 in almost every big chain grocery stores in the GTA. Never had a bad one...

You smack them things and measure the water vibrations after each tap.. The more vibrations the better and sweeter..

I found more often than not the ones I get from no frills are not as sweet. Rarely has an issue with the Costco watermelons plus these are bigger than the no frills ones.

Also FYI picking a ripe one is key as they don’t ripen once picked (I.e wont ripen on the counter). They only get softer. Key is to look for a melon with a nice cream colored spot where it makes contact with the ground. Worse case just google it :)

I bought one from superstore last week that was roughly 20 pounds and it cost $3. Not sure how $5 for a 10 lbs is a good deal exactly.

The $2.88 ones are the small watermelons.

Superstore had them for $3.97 just this past week. Average size was 11 pounds. Costco is overrated.

Average is 11 lbs, just pick a big one. I got both from Costco and Food Basics over the summer and they don't differ in size really.

I think in most cases it's just people's own gut, the best way to find the good one is to slice a small piece, take a bite and make your judgement :)

Smartest thing is to go price match those 2.88 melons with somewhere with the larger ones - last week at Walmart I had melon for days with 3 26 ponders, each under 3 bucks

Pick the one that has a large yellow spot and weighs heavier than it looks. I think as it ripens (gets sweeter) it gets heavier.

I will say that I've gotten watermelons at no frills and Costco over the summer and Costco is definitely better. I've found the no frills one to be somewhat grainy if you know what I mean
