It's $150 to $200 elsewhere, $90 from Costco with FS is a decent price

What effect does that have, the absence of metal? On usability / performance.

Can't use them on direct heat or they'll likely crack/fracture. Stoneware should be used in oven and indirect heating only. The cast iron variants are meant for use on cooktops.

Well, stonewear is cheaper than cast iron, heat conductibility, durability, fragility ... etc. As Le Creuset is famous with it's cast iron dutch ovens, does their stoneware have the same quality or not, I am not sure.
