[Costco] Luminus multipurpose light - $20.99 - in warehouse YMMV

Saw these at Nanaimo Costco. Solid reviews. Have a different brand myself but these are great for the garage/workshop and have the appropriate safety certification which most cheaper Amazon ones don't. $8 cheaper in warehouse than online if your store has them.

I bought one during a previous sale and it’s good. It’s bright, and I like that you can move the lights.

I will take a look tomorrow. A friend is looking for one. Thanks.

Just be aware that these deformable leds are poorly designed for thermal conductivity and the heat will prematurely burn the led's lifespan.

For example, they don't come with any thermal paste, it's just a bare led plate on aluminum, here's an example of mine after I added the grey thermal paste. When you open them up there's nothing, just bare plates on top of each other.

Image

Next up is heatsinking, there's not enough surface to transfer the heat. Even with my small heatsink configuration below, it still gets hot.

Edit: never mind this comment, I was wrong

You say this in a few threads I’ve visited regarding these *kinds* of lights. So it’s clear your post, and those pictures, are not specific to this light OP has posted.

My question is, what is it about this specific luminous light that is being sold at Costco that tells you it shares the same problems? Is it just because they all look the same, or have you actually purchased one and opened it up to inspect?

Does this Costco one have a safety certification (like csa ul etc) that those cheap Amazon ones don’t have? Maybe OP @Krrrong can list what’s specifically on the box.

Back when these things were $50 each, those grid were cast aluminum and the entire light is a giant heatsink, now the lower cost turned them into plastic.

It's pretty clear from the photos that it's this exact light from Costco.

Costs don't come down without some sacrifice of materials or workmanship... Unfortunately....

The photos I've posted is the same product from Costco because.... I BOUGHT IT FROM COSTCO. It says Luminus on the back sticker of the main light body. I also have several variations from Aliexpress and Amazon, only one of those had any thermal paste put in from the factory. The rest are bare LED plates mounted on heatsinks and I added thermal pastes to every one. These gets HOT so the longevity of these lights remains to be seen.

These ones from Costco are aluminum backed. The even cheaper thin fan blade ones from aliexpress or amazon use plastic.

I know what you're saying about the good quality ones that are several times heavier than this $21 light. You get what you pay for.

Any concerns if just using occasionally?

For example, in garage we rarely have light on for more then a couple of minutes.
2022/3: BOC raised 9 times and MCAP raised its prime next day.
2017,2018: BOC raised rates 5 times and MCAP raised its prime next day each time.
2020: BOC dropped rates 3 times and MCAP waited to drop its prime to include all 3 drops.

I stand corrected, I had my impression because I had seen it in other threads before, and I hadnt zoomed in on that photo to see the luminus. Thanks for the follow up.

I will likely pass because I would rather spend triple this price for something I don’t have to worry about. Peace of mind is valuable in and of itself.

It's cheaper to buy a new LED after this burns out in 4 years vs putting all those crappy AliExpress heat sinks and thermal paste and labour. Not to mention you have voided the warranty of your light, and render the CUL/CE rating void as well.

Modifying a light like this it's not the responsibile thing to do and to encourage others to follow is just dangerous.

Licensed engineer here that works with the ESA on a weekly basis and also dealing with commercial insurance claims, I would like to say Folks, Don't do this for your own sake. The gentleman who did this has good intentions and his reasoning is sound to dissipate the thermal energy and prevent premature wear of LED lights, there is no disagreement with that.

It's not rocket science putting thermal paste and heatsinks here, and is actually the smart thing to do if it wasn't for the fact the insurance and safety liabilities that come with this if you screw something up, or let's say you got a defective light that catches fire and burns down the house and they find heatsinks and thermal paste splattered around ground zero.

That is an awesome job. I have read that self certification is allowed, is that true? Are there any checks and balances on certifications?

Forgive me Quentin, I must clarify: I don't work for the ESA, I work with them. My work sites get audited by the ESA and one of my departments deal with insurance claims.

Got one from Scarborough. It wasn't tagged with deal price but when scanned, it was $20 ($25.99 - $6.00)
Cheaper than mentioned in original post.
