[Costco] Scotts Supreme Grass Seed 4kg (8.8lb) bag $16.99

On sale at Costco now are the 8.8 lb bags of Scotts Supreme Grass Seed. I almost always buy my grass seed from Costco - as I can't find it cheaper elsewhere, and this sale makes the deal even better.

As always, the price on Costco.ca is higher ($79.99 for a 4-pack) as it includes shipping. IN-store it's $16.99 for 1 bag.

Pair it up with the soil on sale now at Rona for $0.99 to top dress your lawn:

I'm asking the same questions. Also new to the lawn care topic. Just bought lots of HD soil in case I need it.

I thought all Scotts seeds are the same, just difference in how much water they hold. What would be a better alternative?

Edit: I see you're in the same boat

I've been using these for past couple of years on my lawn. Perfectly happy with it.

That being said, not many other alternatives to compare to from experience.

Bought this one again this year, but I do recommend you make sure to get lawn soil along with this - don't just throw seed on your lawn in hopes of it growing.

I'm no expert gardener by any means... But I use a rake/dethacher, then mix soil and grass seed in a wheelbarrow, spread that mixture across the lawn, then fertilizer.

As for the bad reviews, I didn't even pay attention to those until now. But I've been using this seed every year including this year and didn't notice any issues. I too thought all Scott's grass seed was essentially the same. If it looks ugly this year then I'll switch brands, but I haven't had any issues in the past and I already put 2 bags of this on. Again, I'm no expert though.... Just a guy that wants a decent lawn.

Should we be doing overseeding in spring or is it better to do it in Fall? also when we put soil and seed down, won't it invite more weed?

for all you guys who is looking for an answer about grass seed and fertilizer it can be found in this thread.

I found costco grass seed scott, are a bit weird when grass start growing up and thicker from the rest of my lawn adding to that they are seasonal.

you need to look for grass seed that has "75% Kentucky Blue Grass and 25% Perennial Ryegrass"

People don't know to that you have to test your soil pH level and correct it, best time is fall next is spring.

I think the biggest complaint with these are that there is mostly the annual seed that germanates quick, but only last one year. That seed is typically not bad since it protects the other perennial seeds types that come up slower and once established come yearly.

So ppls grass looks great for a season (and quickly) but then goes back to not looking that great.

So it has been suggested to look for a seed mix that is less of the one season seed varieties and more of the perennial seeds aka comes back year to year.

i used them with top soil that i filled up my whole yard. They turned out ok but i would not recommend them due to the Long Pointy Type Grass Seed in it, it made the lawn look pretty weird. I will try another brand this year.

I bought this and put it on my lawn two weeks ago, with all rain, I still see the seeds, it has not turned into grass yet:( I wonder if I can return the half bag? how long does it take to turn into grass?

If you can still see seeds, perhaps they weren't covered with enough top soil

If you can still see all the seeds then you did not mix it with the dirt correctly. The seed needs to be covered in about 1/8" to 1/4" of soil. I spread the seed and put a bit of soil on top followed by Scott's fertilizer. This was 10 days ago and I have grass growing already. Water daily for atleast a week to get the first inch of soil wet each watering.

I'm so done with Scott's grass seed.

From my little testing the germination rates are terrible (left is Scott's seed and right is clearance Sta-Green I picked up from Lowes). The Sta-Green seems to be germinating at a 10X better rate. I wish I had tested last season before wasting all the work on expensive and apparently trash Scott's seed.

On the Scotts Supreme Grass seed, it don't think it specifies what type of grass seeds the bag contains. Although I have used this grass seed, I usually mix it with the sun/shade coated seeds from Scotts (9kng bag from Costco) which has ok results. But i don't know if its from the coated or non coated.

I did grab 3 bags of the stagreen that anatman mentioned. I did doubt how well it would grow since it was on clearance, but his pics shows that they do germinate. Awesome!

There are alot of things to consider for what type of seeds to use, when to seed/overseed. A lot of it comes down to current lawn condition, size of the lawn, and your budget.
If the lawn is in bad shape right now and you don't mind spending the money, then i'd say seed in the spring and in fall.

I'd say there's a few factors here
1) Its been cold for the last couple of weeks. Wait till its a bit warmer...usually around May 24 weekend is good.
2) Type of seeds used. Ryegrass you will see in about 1-2 weeks. Kentucky Blue Grass is like almost a month.
3) Cover with a bit of soil/peat moss

As for returning the bag, I think it says on either the Scotts or Stagreen bag that you can contact them if you aren't satisfied and they may refund you.

Thanks for that info. In hot dry Alberta, I was thinking of getting this. Would you say it's a good price and option at $9.49 for a 3.3lb bag on clearance? Thanks in advance!
