This isn’t better than the referral deal right? you get someone to refer you and both you and referrer get $50 - or is there a catch to that?

Nowhere
Someone votes poor merchant reputation on every Costco deal. I've never understood that.

That being said, if you can hold off they do offer higher voucher amounts but you have to spend more. When I rejoined last December, it was $50 off $150 on the Gold Star membership and $100 off $250 on the Executive. Since I was planning to buy something over $250 anyways, I signed up for the Executive membership and that voucher covered a good chunk of my membership fee. Coupled with the $25 voucher (I got a gift card) for setting up auto renew and the 2% back on my purchase, my membership was covered. I had been a long time Gold Star member (since the early '90s) but had let it lapse when I realized I no longer spent enough at Costco to justify being a member. I used to split my membership with my dad who stopped shopping there plus many items that I used to regularly purchase they stopped carrying over the years. Ironically it was when I had a Costco credit card that I didn't use anywhere else that I realized how little I spent there. I don't plan on renewing but we'll see at the end of the year.

Just as a PSA, if you return anything from the online order that you use the voucher on, they will deduct a proportional amount from the refund. Case in point, I did the "register a credit card for renewal and get a $25 voucher off a $100 online order". I ordered a couple of pairs of pants and a couple of the (now famous) Kirkland sweatshirts, total came to about $105 before tax. I returned a pair of the pants and they deducted about $6 from the refund. I asked about it and the lady at the counter said that was why,

I couldn't argue the point. I'll know for next time.

You got hustled lol - you get any voucher back as a costco cash card. Call customer service and have them fix it for you.

They got a new system so some folks are doing returns incorrectly if you use a cash card - it shows up as a "coupon" on their main POS system, hence why it got deducted for you.

edit: sorry it goes back to your credit card, they view the "voucher" as a cash card. That's what the customer service line (and a returns desk rep) told me. Same thing almost happened to me (returned part of an order), but I had it rectified.

Should RFD get rid of the "Unable to get the deal" box when voting on a deal?

Edit: now a second one downvoted for "Poor merchant reputation" Face With Tears Of Joy 🤣

Poor merchant reputation indeed! What a clown!

LOL @ poor merchant reputation. Must be the same Guy who downvotes all Costco threads (anonymously, of course 🤦) because he once had a bad experience on His lifetime... We all know here that Costco have one of the best if not THE best return policy, and is a geloved merchant here on RFD... for the one Who downvoted for "unable to get the deal" since you pointed us to this hé just changes his mind to "other". Indeed a revenge downvote. Another childish behavior Face With Tears Of JoyFace With Tears Of Joy

They sometime give better value. It all depends. But for one who thinks about having a Costco membership now it's the best of both worlds. The promo you mention was better then for the Gold Star membership with, actually, a return of 20% when it was 33%, but for the Executive membership it is actually the same return of 40% now, and then

I'll give their customer service a call but I wasn't "hustled". The clerk didn't have anything to do with it, the return receipt shows that it was a voucher and it says in the fine print in the voucher e-mail "Voucher amount will not be reissued if merchandise is returned" so it definitely wouldn't have been re-issued as a cash card.

So what exactly are you saying? Were you able to get the full amount for the returned item back, even though it was purchased using a discount code?

First time I hear of this. The general consensus has been that returning items purchased in part with a promotional voucher means you lose the voucher. If I used a $100 off of $500 and return the item, I get the amount paid on my credit card back, but they will not reissue the voucher.

Yeah I used one of those $25 off $100 vouchers for auto renew. Returned a couple items which took me below $100 (wasn't trying to skirt the rules), and got the full value of my return refunded. Return rep and costco.ca customer service said that's how it should work.

Sounds like I got lucky, then.
