[Costco] Yamaha RX-V385 5.1/Sony STRDH590 5.2 Receivers $269/$349

https://www.costco.ca/Yamaha-RX-V385-5. ... 14797.html
https://www.costco.ca/Sony-STRDH590-5.2 ... 09673.html
Yamaha RX-V385 5.1-channel HDR Receiver with Bluetooth Support $279
Sony STRDH590 5.2 Channel 4K HDR AV Receiver $298

Costco has these two, well rated, entry level, 5.1 and 5.2 channel Receivers until 10/31 and 10/24 respectively, shipped.
These might not be lava hot, but this is Costco, so the return period is at least 90 days, maybe unlimited, so that brings you past Black Friday and Boxing Day to return or price adjust, If there are better discounts on these, or hot BF/BD deals on other receivers. Might be a good option if you need something now, but want to keep the seasonal options open.

11/3
The Yamaha RX-V385 is down $10 to $269 shipped at Costco.
The Sony is still at $349

I would give my life to protect your right to say something really funking stupid.

Respect your OP's. They don't get paid to do this, and don't have to come here to post their deals for you. They can all just hoard their deals in silence, if you prefer?

The Yamaha looks decent. You don't usually get banana plugs at this price

Looks like a Yamaha promo as everyone has it listed for $279 inc Amazon though it's hard to beat the Costco return policy.

People seem to really like the sound quality too, judging by the reviews and comments.

Yep that's true, the Yamaha is available at a lot of vendors at $279.
If someone want a Yamaha and quickly, Visions has them featured in the flyer, and in stock, in store, if you order online for ISPU you will get another $8 off for $271. Return policy is not the greatest though.

Also to buy either receiver online at Costco, you don't have to be a member.

Looks like no network streaming capability on either. Too bad, as the price on each is attractive.

I bought the Sony a year or so ago. Works fine to drive my passive soundbar. I chose it because it is under 12" deep which fits easily into my cabinet. Most other receivers are larger and taller.

I paid about $260 when it was on sale at the Source and they had an online coupon.

The Sony doesn't do any EQ'ing of the sound but I believe the Yamaha would do some coarse EQ when you run the setup.

Not sure how pertinent this comment is or how true this is but I noticed a huge improvement in bass going from a 5.1 to 1 5.2 system. I read somewhere the second subwoofer kind of compensates for bad subwoofer placement to the point you can just place them anywhere and they sound good. So if your room has bad acoustics or whatever this can maybe help a lot.

Pretty sure its not placebo. I don't know if it's just the doubled subwoofer power or some pressure wave/physics stuff going on but even at low volumes now the system is sounding great.

I think you would have to go up another $100 for that in the Yamaha's, at current pricing.

Sony's more, but they do have a 7.2 channel model with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support at $398 for those looking for that functionality.

Two subwoofers is usually better than one for evening out the bass. It's definitely physics. If you can't take the time to fine tune the placement, going with two corners of the room usually yields satisfactory results. Make sure you place them apart, because two subs in the same location acts like one bigger sub.

If anyone is interested in the Sony STRDH790-7.2 Dolby Atmos and DTS:X receiver mentioned above, I noticed that Best Buy has Open Box, GS certified units at $329 shipped.

Can it power on the receiver and tv together if it's plugged into the receiver?

My Chromecast can power on my TV, which then powers on my Yamaha receiver.

Noob question about ARC: Do I plug all my devices into the receiver then plug the receiver into the ARC HDMI on my TV? Or can I plug all my devices into the various HDMI ports in the TV then the ARC HDMI between the receiver or the TV? Because I don't want to use the receiver remote to switch inputs rather than the TV remote. Thanks!

Everything into the AVR and ARC to TV, or at least that's how I have it set up.

I can't remember the reason but I believe the TV can only transmit DD 5.1 and not DD-TruHD/DTS-HD.

I believe the newer e-ARC tech has resolved this issue, but then you'd have to have the newer TV and AVRs with the appropriate specs.

Members, correct me if I'm wrong, especially if I have it setup wrong.

Personally I have these connected to AVR:
1) Rogers Box
2) PS3
3) PS4
4) ARC to TV
5) optical from TV

For whatever reason when I use Netflix/YouTube, sound won't transmit to AVR via ARC

I was considering this unit a few weeks ago but got the denon s540bt instead. It dont have the hdmi upscale like the Yamaha but prefer to use the phone app as a remote. Same price.
