Covered calls and the underlying shares

Hi everyone. I am planning to write some covered calls with underlying shares.

My question is...does my brokerage account (not margin) let me sell the underlying shares before the expiry date if for some reason I decide to sell them? I know I can’t sell naked calls in my account, so I wonder what happens if I try to sell the shares. Does it even allow me to execute the sell? Any experience?

If you are not authorized to sell calls naked, I don't see why they would let you sell your shares with your covered call still in place, because that would effectively render your short call a naked short anyway.

If you must sell, why not just cover your short call, and then sell the shares right way?

I see! So in order to sell the shares I should first buy back the calls, is that right?

Most brokerages require a margin acct to sell options. Did you ask?

Yes my brokerage allows me to sell covered calls without a margin account if I have the underlying shares.

I went ahead and tried it. Sold call options and I can confirm that the account doesn’t allow me to sell the shares without buying back the calls.
