CPA Ontario issues

I have had nothing but headache and frustration dealing with the administration of CPA Ontario.

I am a student with CPA Ontario and since day 1 they seem incompetent and unable to handle anything. It seems all they do is grab money from their students and members to pay for TV advertising instead of actually providing support services.

I've had several issues in my dealings but this really takes the cake. I was conditionally enrolled to enter PEP Module 1 based on i was finishing up my finally prep course (tax). My tax exam results came out December 15th and, admittedly, i did not succeed in the course. I placed an appeal for my exam and it was not successful on December 28th. Since that i received no communication from CPA saying i was withdrawn from PEP module 1 and in fact, still received an email in January for a "disc" self survey to be brought to the introduction seminar. Subsequently, I also was listed in the rooms of where to attend said introductory seminars.

Flash forward to Friday where the only thing in my head alerting me was in their online course platform, i did not have access. After several emails I was instructed not to attend as I had been withdrawn from the course 'sometime last week' and supposedly an email was sent to me. Since this was an expensive module (nearly $1,600), i asked why i was not issued a refund once it was confirmed back on December 28th that my appeal was denied. Somehow, this is their policy that it takes THREE weeks to withdraw me from the course, then another THREE weeks to process the refund. btw, it also takes 7-10 business days for the credit card company to post the refund. So all in all, i wouldn't receive the refund until the end of February. The person I had been dealing with even had the nerve to say 'oh just register again in February and pay, we will give you the money back'

This is only the latest in a series of issues I've had to deal with CPA Ontario over.

Anyone else have their horror stories of the complete ineptitude in dealing with this shady organization?

TL:DR
CPA Ontario has absolutely incompetent people working for it and that its only primary function is to extract as much $$$ from its students and members as possible.

as an extra, yes i do know how to check all my email accounts, junk mail etc and no, there was no email ever sent.

Agreed that they are generally incompetent. But...most professional organizations will take forever to issue a refund. There is simply not enough resources to establish proper controls around this stuff.

Since you knew that you failed, you could have taken the initiative and withdrawn from the course online by yourself. Your credit card would not have been charged in the first place. It sounds like there was a bit of incompetency on both sides.

Welcome to the beginning of dealing with cpa Ontario, this isn't a rare situation. It's rather pathetic how they operate.

I would agree with you but the registration for the course was back in November and payment was made then

I would have followed up with CPA Ontario to ensure the withdrawal and refund will take place ASAP as soon as I knew the appeal failed. The administration is a complete pain in the butt.

I remember submitting transcripts via legacy CGA route for PEP and it took 2 months to get back to me even with proper follow up. Even then they made 2 errors in granting credits and it took another 2 months to correct it, in which I started pressing them. A joke I tell you.

They were much more efficient when they were separated, CA, CMA, CGA.

Now you see the power of monopoly. I wish someone create a new designation in Canada to compete. There is a market for that, oh wait here is one.

at the end of the day what's the big deal? you're getting your money back. it would truly be a horror story of they kept your course fee and didn't issue a refund. yes it's frustrating to have it take so long but it's not like someone died or anything.

I'm expressing my frustration that CPA has consistently shown its incompetence. Besides that, they are asking me to re-register and pay the full $1,600 again before i get my refund. if you have paid for an item and it was defective, would you buy another exact item without them first returning your money? yes this is not an exact replication of the situation but it is very similar.

Things have been a mess since the merge and now they are firing A LOT of their employees.

Customer (member/student) service is not a priority and often is forgotten outright.

So, A bunch of accountants are telling you that you are not getting your money back in a timely manner. That's always been my experience with accountants.

I totally agree to the fact that all the staff there are incompetent. They just don’t do their work. I started my application in 2016. I am an internationally trained accountant. They said I had to wait for a couple of months. I waited for more than 6 months and I called them. They said they didn’t receive any application from me. I reapplied in 2017. They requested 2 references from my home country. I sent to them at once and called them afterwards to make sure there was no ‘delivery failure’ again. But none of them could provide an answer to me whether or not they had received the references yet. The customer service just said they had no idea because the matter was handled by the ITA registrar. They wouldn’t acknowledge upon receipt. And when they diverted my line over to ITA registrar every time there was no one answering my call. The mail box was always full and there’s no way I could leave a message. It’s already 3 months since I re-applied now. They charged my credit card already. I really don’t know what steps can I take further to check my status.

Mun1506,

I could not agree with you more on the about CPA Ontario. ITA registrar dont respond and customer service cant do much except to "elevate" the issue which in opinion does not do anything.

Where are you in the process now? My application has been pending since last year.

Hi there,

I am a new comer of Canada and an internationally trained accountants with destination in the US. I'm planning to immigrate to Canada and I think it will be better for me to transfer my destination from US to here.
But!!! It was the start of the nightmare.

I applied and sent everything to CPA Ontario in January and I knew it will take more than 12 weeks. But before I went to CPA Ontario office in May, I didn't get any feedback from them.
When I went to their office to ask for the response, I got the answer that my destination is no longer been accepted since February. The agent who dealt with my application told me to transfer my destination to other acceptable States.

Then I did transfer to another State on the acceptable lists. And ask the board of State send CPA Ontario the letter of good standing by email in the end of June. And then I tried to call or email the agent to confirm if he received the letter or not.But they never answer the call, listen to the voicemail and answer the email. So I went to their office again in July. The agent told me that he had never received any document about me...He was checking the mailbox in front of me and the lady at reception desk until one of his colleagues brought my letter of good standing in hard copy to him. (What the....)

Then he told me that he will speed up, and then now is the end of August....I called the lady at the reception desk to ask the agent, again he never answer the phone, what's going on.
The lady told me to be patient until she saw my application was submitted in January, then she contacted the agent. The agent said he had never received any documents about me......AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!???

The lady said the agent will call me within an hour....but never received any call from him.
Today finally he replied the email and said that he will give me an update this afternoon. Again received nothing...

I don't know how can CPA professionals be regulated by this kind of organization..
I know they are busy, always. But applicants deserve better. Not like this.
The first time I went to the office, the office really impressed me.
Now the only impression I have is how incompetent they are.

Can I ask for other agents to deal with my application? Or any way to deal with this problem?

May I ask how are your applications going? I also stuck in my application for a while...

have the same issues with CPA Ontario here. they are just incompetent, full of errors and slow. Not sure how they can call themselves professionals. they have very poor communications there, you have to keep bugging them to get an answer. And they will not admit it's their own fault even when you have proof. My story is more complicated than yours. I even wrote to the Joy Thomas, the president and CEO of CPA Canada. they just say we don't interfere with their provincial groups. They are very useless when you want help.

No way. They are really incompetent...
Anyway, You can try to make a comment on their Facebook pages. I made one and they responded right away.
And the agent called me in two hours.
I think it works.

Good lucks

It's not about the reply. it's they don't know what they are doing.
