CRA reassessment for 2020

My daughter, who is student in Western, filed taxes for 2020. She included medical and rental expenses. My daughter today logged in into CRA website and found out that CRA did reassessment on Feb 24 requests from her $1300+ because she didn't submit receipts above! But she had no idea that she should do it! CRA never send any mail via Canada Post that they want to see receipts and regular person won't check CRA website every month....
As she can provide all receipts/statements , I told her to call CRA , explain situation and ask if she can submit all docs now.
Curious if anyone had such issue with CRA? Are there chances that CRA will agree that receipts will be send now?

If she is able to provide the receipts, they will reassess the reassessment.

Are Sunlife insurance statements OK? (some of the expenses were partially reimbursed)?

As long as the expenses are legit, they will accept Sunlife receipts.

I would hope that you didn't claim the amounts that were reimbursed by Sunlife with CRA.

If you pay $1000 in expenses, but Sunlife gives you back $800, you can't claim the whole $1000 - at least that's my understanding.

Call them, they are usually fairly lenient if it was an honest mistake or delayed submission of documentation and not fraudulent claims. If your daughter signed up for electronic communication she would have received an email + mail to the address on file.

If you have signed up for emails, then they won’t send in the postal mail. You will only receive email that you have an unread mail in your account. They are usually very lenient nowadays on the timelines because this is a new change. Call them to explain and also submit documents ASAP on the online portal.

Insurance statement is okay as your insurance company would have also submitted the same to CRA. If you have claimed the full amount instead of the amount you paid from pocket, then this would have raised in the flag resulting in audit.

100% no! I got spreadsheet where all expenses minus Sunlife reimbursement...this is why I prefer to send them (if CRA agrees) Sunlife statements

I don't exactly if she signed or not.......she told me that she was getting emails, but she ignored it as she thought it's a scam! And usually those email are telling you something about HST or Trillium returns. From our own experience, twice in your lifetime we got physical mail via Canada Post requesting to send some receipts.... otherwise I;d tell her to check CRA website from time to time.... I don't blame my daughter, but don't thing it's fair that I'd pay almost $1,400 when all claims were valid

When you have an online cra account, they dont send u letters via physical mail. Instead they tell you via email about any notices and to check on your account for the actual details/reason for the email. Soooo if u think its a scam...fine, but if you go into your browser and log into your own cra account, you can see for urself.

CRA does not require that medical receipts be sent in with returns. But you must submit them if they ask, or audit your return. It sounds like she was asked to submit receipts, and when she did not, the expenses were denied. This resulted in a reassessment and the request for payment. Did she get a revised notice of assessment?

She can call them, but CRA may ask for an adjustment request to be submitted if they already reassessed the return.

Exactly! She got notice of assessment as she ignored email about new message and didn't get this letter by regular mail.

It's not true. I have online CRA account , but twice when CRA wanted receipts , they also send physical mail via Canada Post. Same with my wife....

Call first and explain the situation but watch the dates. Generally they prefer to resolve issue like this without forcing the taxpayer to formally object.
Based on the date of the reassessment if you need to file an objection this must be done by May 25th. Filing an objection will also stall any collection action.

Unfortunately, if you provide an email address on your CRA return, you are agreeing to get all future notices by email instead of Canada Post. It says so right on the return, under where you add an email address "By providing an email address, you are registering to receive email notifications from the CRA and agree to the Terms of use in Step 1 of the guide." Those terms say that "Any mail that is eligible for electronic delivery will no longer be printed and mailed". I don't think it's a good policy since many people will provide their email address without realizing the consequences and, like your daughter, may think the emails are a scam. But going forward, you daughter needs to pay attention to those emails.

Anyhow, don't panic. It's an honest mistake and the claims were valid. So she's not going to owe $1400. You just need to contact them, submit the documents and get this fixed.

Actually, you still should be able to get your notice of assessment and other documents in the mail with an email address on your profile, the email is now mandatory for all My CRA Accounts, its not optional anymore, so yes the email was not forcing us to go digital, it was for an extra later of security because the cra kept getting hacked.

Yes, last time I logged into my CRA, they required an email address, but it specifically stated that providing it did not sign you up to receive digital notices (it was just for security). But, it appears that OP's daughter most likely provided it on her tax return, thereby agreeing to receive digital notices. I'm not sure if there is an option on myCRA to opt out of receiving digital notices once you have already agreed to receive them.

I believe if they require additional supporting documentation, they will send the same communication out via mail to the address on file regardless if electronic communication is chosen. That's just from my personal experience.

That was also my personal experience - and for medical expenses too, like this case. Maybe that has changed recently?

I only got an email to check my inbox. And the inbox message had a link to upload the files. So I think it really depends on what you selected for notification.
