Credit Card Insurance - is there enough travel insurance there?

I currently carrying the TD Visa Infinite credit card and I'm planning to travel to South America for 2 weeks in the fall.

I travel alone, in my early 30s. In the past I would pay for travel medical insurance whenever I go on vacation. Reading the ultra fine print in the cardholder agreement, it states that I am covered for most of the things I would need. Things covered includes: Hospital accommodation, Physicians’ bills, Private duty nursing, Diagnostic services, Air Ambulance, Prescriptions, Accidental Dental... the list goes on. Honestly, that's pretty much all I am looking for in term of insurance coverage.

However, I am concerned because I have never heard of anyone actually making a claim with their credit card company before. There are contact information in the cardholder agreement, but it is buried in the middle of the booklet and it almost seems like they don't want/expect anyone to make a claim.

Does anyone have experience making a medical travel insurance claim with TD or other credit cards? Is it good enough that I should not need to get additional medical coverage?

TD Visa Infinite agreement changes to 21 days on August 16 .. more coverage...

Anyways... I used TD Visa Infinite Visa ... used it three times Once in the states (Needed stitches) and twice in Cuba (Stung by jelly fish and a rash).

Just submitted my bills and got my money back... just did not get my money back for the taxis... oh well (Use to be covered).

Thanks for your response! I have heard all sorts of weird stories of credit card companies trying to pull off funny things that ends up dinging the cardholder. Seems to be the case that at least the travel insurance part of legit.

I might just take my chances and rely on credit card insurance.

You will find similar stories with all sorts of travel insurance - whether it is through your credit card or through your travel agent. The key is that you understand what you are covered for and what you have to do if you need to use the insurance (e.g.: call them first before picking a hospital). Many people just assume they are covered, and assume that the coverage is for whatever they want whenever they want. These are the people that run into problems (and of course those with extremely unique circumstances).

And plan to pay first before treatment, no matter the circumstance. That means you need to plan to have fast access to cash if you need treatment, possibly thousands of dollars. Think about how that would be handled... a spouse taking a cash advance on a CC, someone back home wiring money or something else... You could be lying on a gurney in a lot of pain and nothing will happen till money changes hands.
Thinking seriously about the 4 S's...Sun, Sand, Surf and ... Booked for Sept in Mexico and booked Samana DR for Jan!

I've used emergency medical insurance before, for my son... However it was the type you'd purchase through a travel agency (its an employer benefit for me, but same company). They covered almost 30k and I didn't go out of pocket a cent.

Always make sure you call them, before making any decisions.

I have never made a claim through medical insurance on my TD credit card but I did speak to one of their agents at length one time and they really underlined their requirement that you need to call the number on the brochure before you do anything if you find yourself in a medical emergency. If you don't they could turn you down. Since learning this, I make sure to keep this number available at all times when travelling so I've got it.

I have an Plat Amex, which covers up to 1000$, which was more than enough for my delay in Vancouver for a hotel and $600 worth of food and liquor at Joe Fortes.

Besides what things to be covered, you may well check the total coverage amount for those. If you are finding the coverage amount is not sufficient, then you may consider to go with a Travel Insurance to get more coverage as complement.
