Credit cards with best cashback?

I'll be honest, I haven't been paying much attention to the credit card offerings out there in recent years. I saw this post in another thread, but did not want to derail the for sale thread by asking:
RaincouverCity wrote: It sure is, but people can use certain CC's to get 10% back on purchases, so unless it's below $225 you'll probably have a tough time selling.

So what's out there in terms of good offerings? Is there already a thread with this (I couldn't see anything to address this)? 10% just seems really high (unless it's in return for travel dollars in first class, which is something I wouldn't be using any time soon).

10% is typically a signup bonus.

Cashback cards usually have accelerators with low base rate, whereas some have a flat base rate. Many of us grab 2-3 cards to optimize rewards on little effort.

That makes more sense that it's for promotional offers, I was worried I was missing out on some amazing cards that had that ongoing.

WIth the accelerators, that would be something like having a card like Simplii for the 4% restaurant cash back then? Is there some sort of table somewhere that is regularly updated so I can take a look? For example, I use PC Financial World Elite simply because I shop at Loblaws stores, but I think it's only giving me 3% cash back. and I wonder if there is a better card with the accelerator in the grocery category I could use instead.

You'll likely want a combo of 2-3 cards is with 1-2 AF cards, or 4-7 no-AF cards if you want the merry-go-round.
  1. there's a CC combos thread. Many of us have Cobalt, BNS AmEx Gold, MBNA RWE or some others as a primary card for its accelerators
  2. Some of us get CTFS WE over the PCF because it gives 3% at more supermarkets. Other fillers depending on personal spend...HSBC WE, Simplii, Brim, etc.

OP mentioned PCF so the thread is no longer strict cashback.

BMO Cashback WE MC has 5% for groceries ($500 cap), I think this is the best one you can get for groceries wise(if you only spend $500/month.)

I'd argue that the MBNA Rewards WE MC is a better deal as you earn 5.5x points on grocery. Statement credits are worth 0.83cpp which makes it 4.5% but if you redeem for travel or select gift cards, that's 5.5% back. MBNA's cap is $50k/year which is much higher than BMO's cap.

Thanks, I'll take a look at the combo thread. I'm initially opposed to paying an annual fee, but the rational side of me says I should be the math because it might pay off. I know the Amex cards seem to always have bonuses (in the hot deals forum) to really increase their return.

I have the CTFS WE one as well because it was the only CC that offered a deal with online bill payments. Any idea if there are others that do now?

The MBNA Rewards WE MC pays out 5x on household utilities so I personally no longer use my Triangle WE MC to pay for Hydro or natural gas as I get 3.75% back (after the 1.75% fees and annual 10% point bonus) by using the MBNA Rewards WE MC instead of the 1% back in eCTM. MBNA Rewards valuation based on redeeming points for travel or select gift cards. 3.2% back if redeemed as cashback.

That sounds much better.

What do you mean by "the 1.75% fees"? Is that a fee that MBNA charges?

How do you calculate the 3.2% cashback on Hydro/gas charges? MBNA points are worth 0.83cpp as cashback if I'm not mistaken. So 5.5 x 0.83cpp = 4.58%, less your 1.75% fee = 2.83%

Hydro One and Enbridge don't take credit cards themselves but have partnered with credit card processing firms, they charge the 1.75%.

I must have been mistaken then, I thought it was 0.86 cpp. Yes you're right it should be 2.83% for 0.83 cpp.

For cash back calculation, is the amount for the calculation the total amount charged or before HST?

Canada, Eh!!

Usually total amount.

CT does it on pre tax in form of eCTM for their own stores.
2022: BOC raised 8 times and MCAP raised its prime next day.
2017 to 2018: BOC raised rates 5 times and MCAP raised its prime next day each time.
2020: BOC dropped rates 3 times and MCAP waited to drop its prime to include all 3 drops.

If you're interested in a good cashback credit card, I would recommend the Tangerine Money-back MasterCard. I have this one and it's honestly the best credit card as I get 3 2% CB categories and 0.5% CB everything else. I pair this card with the Wealthsimple Cash card as it gives 1% in rewards/CB.
If you're eligible for the World Tangerine card, would recommend that as it has a few more insurance benefits.
