Credit evaluation while opening chequing account

I've read on this forum that a credit check is not required when opening a bank account in person that will not have overdraft protection or earn interest. I simply can't find information confirming this on any website including

Does anyone know where I can confirm that it is true a hard inquiry is not required to open an account? I'm looking at Scotiabank specifically

Thanks for any help! Sorry if this is the wrong forum

This should answer your question. There are specific reasons why a bank can refuse to open an account for you and not doing a credit check is not one of them. If they refuse, they need to provide their refusal in writing and then you could file a complaint based on that.
