Credit lock now available in Quebec (Equifax and Transunion)

Follow these instructions.
https://lactualite.com/finances-personn ... de-credit/
Equifax is easy, https://www.consumer.equifax.ca/personal/ top right corner but Transunion is tricky and you need a special link. https://secure-ocs.transunion.ca/secure ... ml?lang=fr

Here's the Equifax FAQ if you want to know more about credit lock
https://www.consumer.equifax.ca/persona ... edit-lock/
or better Milesopedia explanation https://milesopedia.com/en/personal-fin ... edit-lock/

Excellent reminder of this new option. Thanks for the PSA, OP!

Done, and done.
I can't afford to buy cheap stuff. Therefore, I'm thirsty for deals on durable goods.

They're probably smarter than us in Anglophone Canada...Even look at the quality of their politicians.

Better consumer protection. Even look at their discount brokers, Desjardins Disnat and National Bank Direct Brokerage - best in the nation.

But realistically, I'm guessing it's probably cuz some dude from Desjardins went rogue and released everyone's banking/SIN details. Took about 4 years for the government to do something, which is actually really good for a Canadian government institution - the fact that they dealt with it at all impresses me.

I guess we're SOL as clients in Anglophone Canada, I'm sure it wasn't 100% QC'ers that were affected. Zero chance it's going to be addressed properly...

Interesting, hopefully other provinces will strengthen their consumer protection legislation.

There still are a lot of exemptions to this credit lock though: https://go.equifax.ca/Bill53Information

Personally, I'd like to see a minimum statutory penalty for credit bureaus that don't remove incorrect information in a reasonable time. As it stands now, credit bureaus have virtually no liability for their mistakes (fixing mistakes is your problem).

Maybe in a decade at our pace...One can dream

I also tend to notice the French will put up more of a fight when they sense an injustice, like legislating beyond a 35-hour workweek and a 62 to 64 year-old retirement age, whereas we Anglo Canada just sorta closes their eyes and thinks of England...Cell phone bills, MER, banking fees, carbon taxes (which we voted for and are now complaining about), shipping costs, internet bills, groceries, taxes, inflation, housing, petrol prices, decline in services in private and public services, common-law asset partition, etc...

Thanks OP...locked my account at Equifax, but don't think I ever created an account with Transunion although some of my credit cards/bank accounts offer free credit score through them. Do I need to signup to a membership to lock my credit at Transunion?

I gave up for TU. Way too complicated and they know it. Easy process for Equifax though.

Equifax went smoothly but Trans Union seems buggy (or is devilish)

On 3 different browsers I went through the process.
First page OK, then after filling and accepting second page I am back to a blan first page that seems identical but will force me into buying a $24.95 product.

Sneaky and infuriating!

Merci RougeJeff, great find, I would gladly give you a thumbs up but do not see the icon on your post (I see it on all others though)

Seulement Quebec. Curiously, there is no idiom that translates to "Fermez les yeux et pensez à la Patrie." They also aren't down with cocufiage sadly, causing sovereignty enjeuxs with Canada's PM. The Trudeaux don't have much luck with Quebec, Pierre had to send in tanks in the 70's from what I read. But also, on a coincidentally related note, didn't Margaret run off with the Rolling Stones in a bbus during Pierre/Margaret's 11th wedding anniversary? You'd swear the Trudeaux were Anglos...

Security Freeze FAQ

What is the credit freeze legislation and how does it affect me?
The Credit Assessment Agents Act, or CAAA, is credit reporting legislation in Quebec which:

Requires credit assessment agents (credit reporting agencies) to provide protective measures for Quebec consumers, through components including fraud alerts, explanatory statements and security (credit) freeze capability
Provides additional consumer rights, through access to a free credit rating (score)
Includes administrative steps to dispute handling
