Data only sim?

Is this not possible here in Canada? I have a 'pay as you go' phone that I rarely use and I'd like to have access to data once in a while so thought I'd buy a data only sim (either switch sims or use the dual sim slot) but I can't find anything? Am I missing something?

Thanks - I was reading up on that but decided I didn't want to hunt store to store in the hopes I'd get lucky. With my luck I'd probably catch the virus while I was shopping.
I'd hoped there was somewhere I could order online...

Several RFDers are filling up groups for Rogers/AT&T data. You don't have to leave your home.

You get 25 GB a month of LTE data on the Rogers network. If you don't use your 8 GB of base data in a month it rolls over so you get 33 GB the next month.

Or is that too much data?

As low as $24 USD a month for 25 to 33 GB Rogers LTE data every month:

TELUS: Unlimited 25 $37.50/25GB x 2 (50 GB pooled data)
AT&T Prepaid Unlimited MAX: Unlimited talk & text in and between the U.S., Canada, & Mexico, ?? GB data

Thanks for the links ...I should have mentioned I only wanted a smidge of data (when camping for weather etc) and I really only want it for a month or two. I don't think I'm going to find anything for my meager needs....

Can you not buy a data pass with your existing mobile phone plan? That would be the easiest because of the startup effort required to get a new sim and plan, etc.

The cheapest I know of is T-Mobile at $10 for 2gb of data. This is prepaid so you can run it for a month or two and then discard it. The only problem is you need to activate it in the US.

I did look into that. I have a monthly plan with zoomer for $22.50, they offered to add 1 Gig and bring up my monthly bill to $27 which was a generous offer but I declined for a few reasons. I don't want to be that person camping with my head in my phone and I didn't want to give up my current 'grandfathered' plan. All I wanted was a few meg to tell me there is a tornado heading my way :)

1 gig for $4.50 a month or $54 / year sounds OK to me.

Is a data plan a requirement to receive emergency alerts? I thought it would alert every device connected to the cellular network - regardless if one has a data plan on not.

Public Mobile's $15 plan gives you a bonus 250mb of data if you turn on auto-pay. And if you sign up now you get two months for the price of one. Per mb rate isn't great, and it's not technically data only, but for low hassle and only a small amount of data it seems to check your checkboxes.

To anyone else asking the same question that I was - for a quick temporary data source - it isn't available here in Canada for a reasonable rate. I've decided I'll go without rather than enable the bottom feeders that supply us with this essential service. I do thank everyone that made suggestions but realized there isn't anything here at the moment with the providers we're forced to use.

If 7-Eleven Speakout offered on demand data, that would be perfect for me.

Lots of really good info consolidated into this thread. Almost worth being "stickied"

For data-only, try the $15 500 MB plan at Lucky Mobile. All of Lucky's data plans and options feature unlimited low speed data if the high speed (bit-rate limited to "3G", about 3 Mbps -- very serviceable) runs out. So, you will never be cut off or billed overage.
