Dead Desktop PC - options?

Well, it seems my Omen 880-030 just went kaput thanks to a corrupt BIOS, and since the motherboard and case are proprietary to HP, I'll have to change at least those (at least, that's what the local PC repair shop told me, I am at best an amateur in computers). I was looking at new gaming PCs, but since my needs for gaming have diminished (I mostly play old and modern RPGs and TBS, as well as some indy game, and am not interested in the modern FPS games, except for the occasional Doom), I was wondering if I was better off simply taking out the GPU (Geforce GTX 1070), the memory (16 GB DDR4-2400) and hard-drives and plugging them in a new motherboard, case and CPU.

I was considering purchasing the "Modest Intel Gaming Build" from PCPartPicker, without the GPU, Memory and hard-drives of course. Would that be a good solution? Would the parts I currently have be compatible? I imagine I may need more than the 550W power supply, but I do not know how to calculate this.

Are there any other solutions I should contemplate?

For reference, here are the Omen 880-030 specs: https://support.hp.com/ca-en/document/c05525863

If you are able to get a computer system put together by yourself or a friend, you could always just buy some parts (no video card or ram) and then just use your current video card and ram. I'm unsure if your power supply from the HP is a standard power supply or some proprietary one. I wouldn't be surprised if the power supply is proprietary. I believe Dell used to do this.

If you have the money then I think you would be better off just buying a pre-built system. For example, this is on sale for $1400 https://www.newegg.ca/abs-ali564/p/N82E ... 6883360194. There are cheaper pre-built systems. Such as, this is $1250 but is not on sale https://www.newegg.ca/skytech-st-blaze2 ... 6883289207.

I didn't check how much ram is in either of those systems but you could put your existing ram into a system that you buy. Keep in mind that if the system that you buy has faster ram then it will slow down to your existing (slower) ram.

Maybe you can just sell your GeForce 1070 and even your ram. I'm not sure what they're worth on the market though.

You can put your existing harddrives into a new computer and use them as additional drives (D drive, E drive, etc). You'll probably have to format them though.

I would just buy a budget barebones kit

Mini Tower Case
500 Watt Power Supply
B450 Motherboard
Ryzen 3600

Should cost ~500$ Tax in shipped to QC

You can reuse your RAM, SSD and video card

Thank you, that's the way I decided to go in. Didn't read the comments on the CPU until I bought the replacement, I'll probably cancel the 3600.

Yeah, if it's still functional.

Probably a long shot but it should be possible to swap the BIOS chip from a dead motherboard. Back in the days of AMD Athlon, I have read of people who would boot into the bios, swap the chips and then reflash the corrupt chip from the booted BIOS.

It works as the program code for the flashing is in the RAM, and so can flash the corrupt chip. May not be worth the effort though

Hold up. I think you got hustled. The case is proprietary yes, but it's just a weird shape and that's it. I think the computer shop looked at it from the outside and automatically tried to upsell you a new system.

I looked at this teardown video of your PC...

The motherboard appears to be a standard micro ATX board, hell even the power supply appears to be standard ATX! Now, I don't have it in front of me to measure to be 100% sure, but just looking at where the screw holes are in that video I am reasonably sure it's standard mATX.

All you may need is a new motherboard! For a ryzen 1700 you'll need a motherboad using a 300 series chipset, some 450 series may also support the chip but you'll need to do your homework on compatibility.

The BIOS chip can be reprogrammed with the right tools. But the cost paying someone to do that might be the cost of a cheap motherboard ($50-80). One can frequently find USED mATX B450 boards on Kijiji and FB marketplace for sub $80, so that could be a viable route.

A Ryzen 1700 should work in any 300 and 400 series motherboards. It's just the 500 series ones that won't support 1000/2000Ryzens and 3000series APUs, although things may change with future bios update. Rumor has it AMD is allowing 5000 series support on 300series boards, its upto the manufacturers to release the appropriate bios files, YMMV depending on the model of the board.
