Death on the Nile (Kenneth Branagh reprising as Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot)

Coincidentally after the 1974 Orient Express there was a Nile film released a few years later in '78

Jennifer Saunders, Dawn French and Russell Brand taking dramatic roles?

I'm a fan of the Christie whodunits. I just wish the new movies were more original and unpredictable for those already familiar with the original plots. And Ustinov was a funnier, more enjoyable Poirot than Branagh.

Once you know the ending the remake loses its effect.
we are all just one bad day away from losing everything

Heard this one is fairly flat.

I wonder why they keep remaking movies. Have they run out of ideas? This movie did poorly at the box office, maybe break even at best. Just like West Side Story remake which bombed even worse
Have a nice day!

Of course it did poorly. The first one wasn't that great to begin with. The movie was originally planned to release October 9, 2020. With covid it was delayed 2 or 3 times and Armie Hammer got into a scandal and got canceled and the studio thought about recasting his part and reshooting some of the film. They probably came under the conclusion that injecting more money into the movie wasn't such a great idea.

For what it's worth they may do a 3rd one, but maybe they should think about adapting one of Christie's book that wasn't adapted before instead of doing those that already got a movie back in the day...

In this case, the choice is likely due to it being one of the higher ranked Agatha Christie novels.
While she wrote lots of books, I imagine many of them might not be easy to convert into film.
I think many are likely way too old timey wimey.

Poirot does not seem like a hero for the 2020's.
My bias is likely due to never forgiving Branagh for Wild Wild West.
Whenever I see him, I'm reminded of his stupid and super annoying character from that film.
Try as I may, I can't unsee that.

My god..... The horror....

I saw it last night and thought it was pretty good. There aren't a lot of these old-timey throwback movies made anymore. If you liked Murder on the Orient Express, you will probably like this one as well. I've read the novel and was pleased at the changes they made to various characters. They're already working on a sequel.

The CGI was a bit on the wonky side, both visually and in accuracy. The Pyramids of Giza are not right next to the Nile as shown in the movie. It's also a bit hilarious how many controversial actors they managed to get without knowing it (Hammer, Wright, Brand and to a much lesser extent, Gadot).

There's a movie that should have never existed. The movie itself was bad but the humour, even for the time period of release... just so wrong. I even paid money to see that in the theater.
Compare the humour to another Western comedy, Blazing Saddles. As wrong as some of those jokes were, there wasn't a meanness to them at least.

I was living in eastern Europe winter-summer 1999.
When I came back to Canada, rented it to smoke some weed and watch with some friends.
Knew absolutely nothing about it.

Despite smoking large amounts of weed, I think we stopped the movie about 4 times, to flip through channels and see if there was anything else we could watch.
With all the movies and all the weed smoked over the years (same group of friends), that had never happened before.
We certainly watched plenty of bad movies - but this one was intolerably bad.
I've never had such a bad reaction to a movie prior, or since this.

I forgot Ustinov also starred as Poirot in Evil Under the Sun
AFAIK the 70s Death on the Nile was an unofficial sequel to Orient Express and I guess Evil was an unofficial sequel to Death
If Branagh does adapt Evil it seems a little too slavish to the previous cycle OTOH maybe those are the three most cinematic Christie Poirot books?

LOL, we watched it last night and it drove hubby *nuts* that they had the Pyramids so close to the Nile. Not to mention Abu Simbel, making it look like you could swan dive off Ramses II into the Nile. That's just lazy CGI.

Not to mention that Poirot, Bouc and his mom travel from the Pyramids to Aswan, a distance of almost 900 kilometers, in just a couple of hours lol!
