I wanted a 2K system from Eufy to avoid subscriptions. I started searching for limitation around the Homebase 2 and its storage (I also hate to climb in a ladder 2 or 3 times a year to charge the cameras) when I fell on this :

Some examples (all offered with free shipping) :

Wired :
4K Ultra HD 1TB w/ NVR Security System with 4 Cameras : 473 - 30% + tx = 380.84
4K Ultra HD 1TB w/ NVR Security System with 3 Cameras : 410 - 30% + tx = 329.57
4K Ultra HD 1TB w/ NVR Security System with 2 Cameras : 370 - 30% + tx = 297.79

Semi-wireless (still power adapter but is Wi-Fi, no NVR with HDD, you need to provide micro sd card) :
Guard 2K WiFi. Plug-In Power Security with 1 Cameras : 126 - 30% + tx = 101.41
Guard 2K WiFi. Plug-In Power Security with 2 Cameras : 228 - 30% + tx = 183.10
Guard 2K WiFi. Plug-In Power Security with 3 Cameras : 322 - 30% + tx = 259.47

Taxes were calculated with a QC postal code, so it might be less for other provinces. I didn't try.

Instead of going with a 2K system, I decided to go with a complete 4K system instead.

HomeDepot sells the same systems but they can match the price, not beat it. I still ordered from the company.

These are BNC systems not POE.
You are better off getting apoe cameras since you will be running the BNC cables any way.

A lot of flexibility when using a poe camera in terms of software, backups etc.

Agreed. You are looking at $100 per 4k camera that way though, not $340 for 4 cam kit. but something like reolinks you don't even really need a nvr if you use microSDs in each camera + mobile app. If you do want nvr they run rtsp and rtmp protocols with onvif discovery. Annkes are very nice poe units as well with good quality lenses. Hikvision the gold standard in industry with a lot rebranded from their oem.

Why are POE cameras better? why are bnc cables worse than network cable? why flexible, the hk poe cameras ive used are totally locked out from using anything but hk hardware, how is this flexible?

dont be fooled with this 4k nonsense, the bit rate of these things is less than television from the black and white days.

Whatever technology you choose, with the 4k cameras I chose, I should be good for 20 years. For upgrade purposes, I will certainly rewire anyway for better cables. Even if I wire cat6s or bnc, both will probably be obsolete in 20 years.

FYI Defender cameras support rtsp through the recorder

I have the wired 4K + 1Tb HD system with 4 cameras and it is a great value IMO.

I have been using Defender camera security systems for the past 10 years with no issues. I recommend them!

Does the NVR detect people or just motion? I find motion alerts are super unreliable where people detection like on nest cameras is super reliable.

Agree that Hikvision is the gold standard. I have a pair of Hikvision VT2202 doorbell units. At dusk my camera monitor makes it look like it's still daylight outside and at night the streetlight illumination from across the street continues to make everything visible. Lighting is complex because illumination comes from the streetlight, motion activated carriage lamps, and camera infrared. You need to see how the camera responds to outdoor environment otherwise you're likely to get a bunch of washed or blown out crap. Hikvision doorbell units properly support RTSP and can call VoIP. There is no vendor lock-in or monthly fees. Mention this for context.

Also have two Reolink cameras and they are worth the $80 I paid for them but not effort it took to install. Camera software, in my units, does not allow straightforward keyframe configuration which causes all sorts of issues when attempting to record motion through software analysis. Also the built-in web browser uses an ActiveX API which natively works on virtually nothing these days. Experts say I wasted $160 bucks on Reolink and based on my limited comparison I tend to agree.

AFAIK starlight 2Mpixel is still the preferred camera implementation for home security installations because of excellent all round day/night performance. I'm convinced a proper camera review from a respected reviewer is needed before buying. Price is secondary.

Hello Nerodark,

I own a Defender 4K Ultra HD system with 4 cameras and I’m now trying to connect it to Home Assistant. I came across this post where you said you can see the cameras stream using RSTP. I’m not able to make it work. I tried different browsers with no luck. I also talked to Defender support and they said this system only works with the Defender 4K app.

How did you make it work? Is there something I need to change in the Defender 4K app settings?

Thanks for your help.

If you own the 4K White DVR Defender system (the analog one, very important) like I do, then you are good. Just so you know this model is a rebranded Hikvision system so anything you search online for Hikvision may be compatible with your system as well, including their softwares. I use this iVMS-4200 software for playback purpose on my PC because I hate the Defender app.

To enable RTSP, you can enable these features locally on your DVR or through the web interface (yes, that DVR has a web interface) at its address: http://dvr-ip
Login with your admin account.

Then, make sure the RTSP/ONVIF settings are enabled as shown in the 3 attached pictures.

Then, you access your stream with the following rtsp urls:
Camera 1 Main stream : rtsp://admin:[email protected]:554/Streaming/channels/101
Camera 1 Sub stream : rtsp://admin:[email protected]:554/Streaming/channels/102
Camera 2 Main stream : rtsp://admin:[email protected]:554/Streaming/channels/201
Camera 2 Sub stream : rtsp://admin:[email protected]:554/Streaming/channels/202
Camera 3 Main stream : rtsp://admin:[email protected]:554/Streaming/channels/301
Camera 3 Sub stream : rtsp://admin:[email protected]:554/Streaming/channels/302
Camera 4 Main stream : rtsp://admin:[email protected]:554/Streaming/channels/401
Camera 4 Sub stream : rtsp://admin:[email protected]:554/Streaming/channels/402

Channel-zero multicast stream : rtsp://admin:[email protected]:554/Streaming/channels/1

For Home Assistant, I use the intermediary Frigate home assistant addon to integrate it with rtsp streams. Search online for youtube videos and pages on how to integrate as it takes imo a bit of skills.

Thank you so much for your detailed answer! I was able to access my DVR via the web browser and I also installed the Hikavision app IVMS-4200 you recommended. It’s a really nice app and it even has a Mac version! For the first time I was able to see my cameras outside the Defender DVR or it’s crappy mobile app!

Now, I’m diving into installing Frigate on my Home Assistant VM. And the configuration file is a bit tricky with an overwhelming amount of options! But I watched some videos and it is really cool what it can do. It may take me some time to get it right, but I’m excited to get it going!

Thanks again for your precious help!
