I just dusted off a surface pro 3 and noticed that it has only 1 usb...this meant that I need a wireless keyboard/mouse combo, so I googled around and this appears to be the best deal right now.

what's better for speed (ie: gaming situation) - bluetooth or using the little wireless dongle receiver ?

Wireless is generally faster than bluetooth, but you may or may not notice the speed difference.

I say "generally" because different models perform differently. A good bluetooth mouse can be just as fast as a wireless mouse

Can't seem to find the dpi on the mouse. Any clues?

It looks like the mouse is Microsoft Wireless Mouse 1000. CNET shows 1000 dpi for it.

How are you going to connect it? This is not bluetooth and will monopolize your sole USB port with the transciever.

It might connect both mouse and keyboard if it's like Microsoft keyboard 900

I'm sure it will but then you've got a keyboard/mouse connected but cannot use your usb for files or anything else because the transciever is monopolizing it. For a Surface, I find you either need the keyboard/cover or a bluetooth keyboard/mouse combo if you want to keep your usb free.

Or a USB hub.
though it might not be the prettiest thing to see sticking out of your surface but it's functional,

Oh, there are solutions but you're just better off getting a BT keyboard when you have a Surface. I have a 5 y.o. Surface 3 and my keyboard/cover is starting to get long in the tooth - a little fraying at the edges. Still works okay and, for now, it's just an aesthetic thing. I ordered a Microsoft replacement keyboard/cover for $80 as an eventual replacement because these things are getting scarce given the age of the Surface 3. Because it's a tablet and I don't want to have to pack up a bunch of peripherals when I travel, the keyboard/cover works best for me - keeps the USB free.

This is a decent price, but I went through a few Logitech keyboard mice combo before I settled with MX keys & Mx Master 2 mouse. It's expensive but if you work with multiple pc (mac os/Linux/Windows). The keyboard battery lasts a few months and the mouse battery lasts 1 to 2 months. It's worth spending extra money. Also, I bought both on sale (<$100) so you don't have to pay a premium just keep eyes out for the sale.
