How To Purchase
redflagdealsguy wrote: Steps for Purchasing Dell Inspiron 5505
0. Start in Google Chrome, disable adblocking and enable scripts (if you've previously changed those settings).
1. Navigate to https://www.rakuten.ca.
2. Create an account if you don't have one, otherwise sign-in.
3. If you've created an account you may be asked to click a confirmation link in your email. Open another tab to access your email so you may 'confirm' your account.
4. Return to your original tab, and search for the 'Dell Consumer' page on Rakuten.
5. Click on the Dell button within the 'Dell Consumer' page, which navigates you to the Dell.ca landing page.
6. Always staying within the same tab, search for 'Dell Inspiron 5505', and select the top result for the laptop with the sale price.
7. Once you're on the laptop page, add the laptop to your cart with any added features/configurations you select (e.g. extra warranty).
8. Proceed to the cart.

Unidays Steps
9. In a new tab, navigate to my https://www.myunidays.com/.
10. Create an account with an approved university / college / organization email address, if you have one (not everyone does).
11. Search for Dell and navigate to the Dell page.
12. Click 'Get Now' and generate a code if not already there, then copy said code.

Returning to your Dell Checkout Tab
13. Paste your Dell code into the field to the left of the 'Apply Coupon' button on your checkout screen.
14. Proceed to 'Secure Checkout', 'Express Checkout', or PayPal.
15. Complete your purchase / order.

Bonus (Semi-Optional)
16. Obtain your Dell Order number (see your email).
17. Go to Rakuten.ca in a new tab, and click 'Contact Member Services' at the bottom (try CTRL + F those words on the main page).
18. Fill in 'Where's My Cash Back?' form with your Store Name, Date of Purchase, Order Number, Purchase Subtotal, and copy-and-paste text of your Order Confirmation (from your email).
19. Click Submit.

Locking in $699 Price on the Dell Inspiron 4500U
1. Call Dell Canada Sales.
2. Provide existing account information (past customer).
3. Inform the rep you want the Dell Inspiron 15 with the Ryzen 4500U CPU.
4A. Provide the Unidays code.
4B. Ask if there's a potential loyalty discount, they may apply it automatically.
5. Let them know you're not willing to go over $700 because you've found a Staples Lenovo Ryzen 4500U machine that's essentially identical at $699.

https://www.staples.ca/products/2974876 ... ws-10-home

6. Ask kindly if they'll consider doing a price adjustment (not a price match), otherwise you might buy the Staples machine instead. You're letting them know you're prepared to buy with them today if they approve the adjustment. Remember, it's not a precommitment for an order, just an expression of interest so you're not bound.

Good luck.

Realtek and AMD Audio Driver Issue

Problem
Dell laptop inspiron 15 5000 series - no sound from headset port
Just started to use my new laptop Dell Inspiron 15 5000 laptop. I realized that something is wrong with the headset port. I have tried to use my earphones and then headphones which the laptop not able to recognized a headset device connected to it. The music sound was still coming out from the laptop speaker and did not switch to the earphones / headphones. (Note: I plugged in them properly.)
Solution
Hello. Test the audio driver by switching between the Realtek driver and the Windows native audio driver.

1. Open the Device Manager (find it in the Control Panel, or type devmgmt.msc into the search box).
2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".
3. Select to "Update Driver Software".
4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".
5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".
6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked [but SEE NOTE].
7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).
8. Click "Next".
9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver).
10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted, sometimes you have to restart, sometimes not.
[To get back to the Realtek driver, do it again but reverse the names in steps 2 and 7.]

NOTE: if you have a 2-in-1 model and do not see a "High Definition Audio" option after step 6, then uncheck "Show compatible hardware". Then in step 7, if you see 2 "High Definition Audio" devices, select the 2nd one. On some models it is called Intel High definition Audio.

If you only have the symptoms with one of the drivers, then the other is at fault. If you have the same symptoms with both audio drivers, then it is very probably not a driver issue.

How To Fresh Install Windows 10
redflagdealsguy wrote: Download Windows 10 Media Creation Tool.

Put in a blank USB key, and allow Microsoft to download and install Windows 10 bootable files to your USB.

When it's done, take the USB key and plug it into your Dell 5505 (ensuring the laptop is off first).

Turn on the laptop, and hit 'any key' to boot into the Windows 10 installer from your USB key. From there, you can follow the prompt to overwrite the existing partition as you install a Windows 10 fresh install.
Warranty
redflagdealsguy wrote: As it turns out, this product already includes the more robust 1-Year On-Site Support Option. A reasonably good warranty option, and superior to their standard warranty.

Image

If you're looking for your colleague to keep this unit for 5 years, then I would get the 4-Year On-Site Support Option + Accidental Damage coverage.

Image

All this for a price of $867.99, not including discounts.

$867.99 - New Account Code - Rakuten = $765.57 + HST

A very strong showing for a value-performance laptop with a generous warranty package.

Thanks for asking.

My son bought an XPS 13 a few weeks ago and wasn't happy with it. He was able to return it without the 15% fee. He simply told them about the build issues (a slight bulge on the palmrest) and functional problems (periodically drops wifi, occasional screen flickers).

Realistically, if your only reason for returning a product is that you're experiencing buyer's remorse, you *should* be charged a restocking fee. You're costing the company money.

This is correct, gentlemen.

I've heard the following be accepted with full refund.
- Hardware incompatibility through I/O
- Software incompatibility through stock OS
- Hardware defect

The list goes on.

Do not suggest that you've opened the laptop or attempted to upgrade it. Ship it back with stock parts.

I normally loathe to consider Dell laptops (particularly the XPS line) based on experience with their common use of Killer wifi chips. Thankfully this model doesn't have it.

Having purchased a Dell XPS 15 and an HP ProBook within the last year, [...].

The XPS is a beautiful machine. And considering the price, the ProBook is incredible value and looks to be pretty well built.

I've always stayed away from Acer, though.

Most brands have crap lines. Just make sure you do your research and avoid those.

The Toyota Corolla of laptops.

I have owned 4 different Inspirion 15s over the decade (all RFD recommendations) and they've all been great. I find their price point and value to be very good. You're not getting all the bells and whistles with these machines but if you're not big into games then you should find these laptops more than adequate for at least 3 years. Someone's going to reply to this thread and tell you 8GB is not enough and I'm going to disagree with them on that.

From a reliability standpoint, everything has been good except I had a fan issue on a laptop about 2 years into owning one. I took it to an independent shop in the city and fixed it for 60 bucks.

Hope this helps. Good luck. Filter the noise and buy the machine that's right for you.

The Ryzen 4700U passmark is nearly 14,000.

It's 25% faster than the 4500U and twice as fast as the previous 3700U.

I'm fighting the urge to buy this right now with Unidays.

I already have 32GB DDR4 3200Mhz CL16 SODIMM (2x16Gb) ready for this puppy. I was considering 64GB, but at that point it's just bragging rights.

2020 with a Ryzen 4700U + 32GB.

Maybe 2021 with a 5700U + 64GB.

the usual problems plaguing the XPS 13. i'm lucky mine only suffer the periodical wifi drops. if your son still wants a XPS, the 15 is the one i'd recommend. yes, it is bigger and heavier but he'll be able to replace the wifi card by something much better as it is not soldered like in the 13. as for the rest, it's mostly luck of the draw
