Main Competitor:
The Lenovo Y740 is around the same price range, runs cooler, and has a G-Sync screen. Lenovo laptops take forever to ship though.

The G7 is such a bulky laptop with incapable cooling for 2019. The Lenovo Legion Y740 is the way to go.

Thanks for the post op.

I'm going to wait to see the pricing for the 9th gen y740 and y540 before I make a decision.

Also if you have Amex, check out Amex Offers to see if you have anything for Dell.

There's offers for $100 cashback on $750 purchase, and 1 Point per dollar spent.

(You'd only see one or the other, not both)

Did they improve the cooling from the Y730 as that was the worst of 2018

How do you know that you're getting the 144hz display on the G7? My configurations are only showing one monitor and it does not specify.

Thanks for any reply

People who want more than 8GB ram for gaming don't understand how ram is used for gaming. 8GB system ram is enough. In fact, there have been tests showing that 12GB ram performs with lower fps than an identical system with 8GB. The RTX 2060 comes with 6GB GDDR6 ram itself too. Focus on the ram speed not the amount as long as it's a least 8GB.

A genuinely crappy spec of this system is the 1tb 5400rpm. Tear that shit out and put a decent SSD in there.

That’s because 12 gb ram makes no sense since it wouldn’t be dual channel. 8gb ram isn’t good enough for a gaming laptop in 2019, some games use 6+ gb by themselves.
I’m aware most games are ok with 8 gb today, but an increasing number are not so it would seem important to go with 16gb if you want to play upcoming games.
Here is the difference in battlefield v between 8 vs 16

Edit: you can use odd numbers of ram sticks in flex mode in the right situations, ymmv.

HOT and HEAVY. Enough said. Price is right though. I suspect once 10 series laptop stocks are depleted these will be normal prices around holiday season this year.

@l4rate you’re just flat out wrong. Not in 2019 and never again will 8GB be good enough for a high end gaming laptop

@KevinC268 good backed up response, thx

Cancel y540 for this since someone in the other thread said the g5 is better? So g7 is a no brainer!

Usually Lenovo has good cooling but in some cases G5/G7 (new generations just out like the SE one) have slightly better cooling (more cooling pipes)
With an RTX 2060 you'll really see the not so cool Lenovo for sure. 99C CPU will be there for sure in Ultra Games.

No, no, no, no.
THIS G7 does NOT have the large battery due to the inclusion of a 2.5" hdd so the battery life is pretty much the same as the price error Y540. It also has less ram compared to the price error. I think the price error also has a G-Sync 144hz screen whereas this one it's unknown whether it comes with a 60hz screen or what.

Did you check exactly what internal part was causing the problem ? The RTX2060 is probably not the cause of your problem.
Modern i7 run HOT, much more so than the GPU, and that can cause the CPU to throttle down in a way to cool off excess heat.
A quick fix can be applied by simply deactivating the CPU boost fonction with throttlestop. On a modern i7 you will see absolutely no loss of performance from doing this. A very slight undervolting can also help in more extreme cases.

It also doesn't help that those thin chassis everybody now crave make it much harder to dissipate heat properly.

Simply blocking turbo boost on my laptop (MSI model with i7-7700HQ) dropped the CPU temperature by 15c, going from mid-high 90s when gaming to a more acceptable lower 80s. The GPU was always high 70s so not a problem. Drop in temps should also result in less fan noise.

A few comments here. The above is true, the G7 does have the same battery as the G5, hence less battery life due to the larger screen. Heating wise, I mentioned the 1650 card , if you go RTX 2060 expect a lot more heat. Having a 17" case should make things better, but as far as I read from the reviews the G7 is really cooking with the RTX2060 card. So, what I got was the G5 with 60WH battery and 1650 card and a Gen9 i5 CPU. That runs smoothly as the G5 was theoretically designed for the 2060 that heats up more.

But hey, in the end I guess it's more like a matter of personal preferences vs design/look vs performance and not lastly trust in the brand you purchase. So, some people might go the Lenovo way, some take on the Dell path and some go for MSI/Asus or even Acer. There's plenty of choices on the market and each of them have pros and cons. Same as a car, a lot of us would put an accent on the look or shape of the laptops we buy cause see....we take them to be our companions in life - for a few years at least , so you have to like them don't you ?
