For daily office use and browsing, I won't spend that extra $120 for 4700u.
If you are into gaming and CPU-intensive multi-tasking, go for 4700u without a second thought.

There's another 3200 MHz RAM from Crucial: CT2K16G4SFRA32A. In the description, it says "CT2K16G4SFRA32A is a 32GB Kit consisting of (2) 16GB DDR4 notebook module that operates at speeds up to 3200 MT/s and has a CL22 latency. It is an Unbuffered SODIMM and can be built either single-ranked or dual-ranked. It conforms to the industry standard DDR4 SODIMM layout of 260 pins and is compatible with systems that take DDR4 3200 MT/s SODIMM memory."

If this RAM can either be single or dual rank, can you actually set it to be one or the other somewhere? In the BIOS?

I think it just means that that there are options for both kinds when purchasing. Currently the dual rank is available for 173.55 but the single rank is not available.

From what I understand about single and dual rank is that it's a hardware attribute so I don't think you can change it anywhere.

That would make sense but the dual rank one is CT2K16G4SFD832A and the single/dual rank is CT2K16G4SFRA32A. They don't make it clear how the latter can be either single rank or dual rank.

You're right. That is odd. Not really sure what they're going for there.

Is it worthwhile to wait and get a laptop with 5700U CPU?
If you're in no rush, set money aside. The first such Dell laptops will appear on sale by mid-summer 2020.

On the flip side, will Dell nuke the upgradeability advantage in the new generation? Not completely, is my guess.

I think (2x) SODIMM upgradeability is here to stay, but we got lucky with two functioning NVMe slots.

Finally: If they do a super clearance sale on the 5505, unlike what we've seen before, then it's a straight buy.
I aim to be inclusive and considerate of others in my posts. If I fall short of that mark, feel free to let me know in good faith, and where appropriate, I'll edit my posts. Thank you.

The one with Ryzen 5700U CPU is Inspiron 7415, which is the successor of 7405. Specs of 7415 are already available on Dell Website (see link below):
https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en ... lang=en-us

The only difference I noticed between 7415 and 7405 is CPU. Upgradability is as good as before; display and port selection are as bad as before.

It appears no successor for Inspiron 5505 has been announced. 5505 might be discontinued.

From my understanding D is for dual and R is single.

I was referring to a proper sale by midsummer, rather than MSRP listing or a mild discount.

Don't give up on a successor for the 5505 just yet

I'm keeping an open mind.

aviador wrote: IMO, it doesn't matter if the current "5505" gets discontinued. Traditionally, for Inspiron 3000/5000/etc families, Dell just reuses their frames and refreshes a little bit their hardware. Although Dell advertising usually makes bold claims about their products being completely redesigned and whatnot.
Dell has announced the Inspiron product line refresh (see link below). It appears there will be no successor for 5505.

https://www.windowscentral.com/dell-ins ... nouncement

My point is if someone want an 5505, he/she might need to buy it sooner than later. 1 or 2 months from now, it's possible the only Inspiron with AMD CPU available will be 7415, which is a 14" 2-in-1 7000 series laptop and its price will be significantly higher.

Received my 4500u a couple of days ago and everything seems solid except for one bizarre thing. My laptop doesn’t detect the integrated webcam. What the heck? Anyone else had this problem? I opened Google Meet and when I clicked to open my camera, the laptop said “we can’t find your camera”. I do have sound from the mic at least.

It looks the 4500U model has been removed from Dell website. The 4700u model is still there, selling for $1000.
