Depositing cash into Tangerine bank account via Scotiabank ATM

I tried to deposit $1000 in 20s yesterday via Scotiabank ATM (envelope less deposit) and the machine didn't accept my money. Has anyone had an issue with this before?

The Tangerine location in DT has closed down and the ATMs at the Tangerine head office at Steeles are no longer there. How do you Tangerine account holders ever deposit cash into your accounts?

What do you mean by "the machine didn't accept my money"?

Was it an error message on the machine? What prevents you from trying other Scotia machines?

It just didn't take my money... It took it at first, seemed like it was counting it and then about 15 seconds later, it spit the money back out. It didn't give me any error message, but the message said basically to take back the money. I tried two machines, diff locations and same thing.

Envelope less deposit? I'll try another location later today. If I don't get my money deposited, I can't pay my bills this month lol.

Did you try splitting it over 2 deposits? Maybe a specific bill is causing the issue or it was just too much for one deposit.

The machine thought your money was fake. Either its fake or the ATM wasn't working. Did you call tangerine?

Yes. Large amount so splitted into two transactions at two side by side machines.

Well.... The machine friggin ate my money this time and Tangerine has no record of it being deposited... So I have to wait until they finish their investigation to see if I can get my money back. Ridiculous.

I use ATMs belonging to Scotia and TD and I feel the Scotia ATMs are worse. If I am depositing a handful of bills in Scotia ATM, invariably it will reject some of the bills, no matter how many times I try, unable to read them. The same bills are gobbled up by the TD ATM like a knife through a butter.

Now if I have to deposit cash I prefer to use the TD ATM. I have accounts both at TD and Tangerine.

With larger sums of money, I prefer to deposit the money with a teller at my bricks and mortars bank. Then I'll go online to transfer it to Tangerine.

Interesting thread.

In terms of ATM, who wrote the code to recognize bill and other functions? I thought all banks ATMs are pretty much same?

Only problem I've had was when trying to deposit into the savings account.

If I have cash that I want to put in my Tangerine account, I just deposit it in my linked account (TD Canada Trust or RBC) at the teller (I don't trust doing cash deposits at ATMs) and just pull the money on Tangerine.

I've only used a Scotiabank ATM to withdraw cash from my Tangerine account.

I deposited $1800 and had to wait 2 months for the investigation to be completed with Tangerine at a Scotia ATM.

This.
I absolutely suggest this. Also I have never deposited even $100 cash for long time. But keep the cash at home just in case.

Sounds like the situation I am in. They said it takes 6 weeks to do their investigation.

Had a rejection at the Scotia ATM too but mine was related to trying to deposit the cash to my Tangerine Savings account and it accepted the deposit when I selected my chequing account.

Not sure it will help you now but I have found that flipping my bills the other way (even if I have to do it 4 times) helps. Also deposit them in smaller batches. For the longest time I thought it was just me… but I fight with the Scotia machines each week.

Even the tiniest of creases will make the system reject it. Often I have to put the $ in a heavy book to straighten the bills out & pray.

Good luck!!!

How are you in this situation? This is more serious as you have an extra barrier between you and your bank account. Is it possible to get paid by cheque or direct deposit?

I'm surprised an envelope-free ATM did not resolve your situation. If you get paid by cash, like a Kijiji re-seller, you need to open an account at a bank with actual branches. That sucks, but using cash like that is expensive. You can get a free savings account at Royal Bank (well, free except for the $1 Interac e-transfer charge) and you can still use that bank account to pay bills. I don't know how that interacts with an ATM but you can schedule biweekly deposits with a teller. (Not an official schedule, just put that into your Google calendar.)
