I can see why locals are not happy in places like Venice. We stayed there for a couple days when the kids were young. Between 4pm and 10am, the place is deserted even in peak season.
The cruise industry has managed to capture most tourist spending in these places, dumping thousands of people, each day, while they only buy a sandwich or coffee for lunch. Those places should charge the cruise ship a lot more to dock to spread the benefit from tourisme to the locals.

There are definitely people who LIVE in Venice
But even the Venetians admit
The city has been a tourist draw
More than anything else for the last few hundred years

Sadly that’s its reality now

Almost cartoon like in its being a destination
You reach by rail, or boat
Much like a Disney Theme Park

They’ve tried to curb the damage that the cruise ships have wrought
(Thru their wake and erosion etc )
By putting most of them now in Ravenna

But …
I don’t think the overall mindset on what Venice is
Is gonna change anytime soon

We have Italy / Venice on our itinerary for an upcoming land trip
The city is crazy expensive to stay or eat in
But it’s something we’ve decided we’ll budget for
So as do better by both the economy
And the locals

It is a lot of tourists that go there but a high amount of their gdp. I wouldn’t like it if i couldn’t afford staycations in my own province either.
fact of the matter though is that tourism brings in money to all residents. If there was no tourism or tourists, there would be lots of empty and dilapidated towns and villages. As much as locals seem to be disliking tourists, if the tourists were not there, they would not have work and incomes.
As for staycations in your own province or town...I see you are from Vancouver. We are going to be there (and several other places in BC) in September...have you looked at the prices there??? It is cheaper to go to the US or Europe than Vancouver and BC. :)

The headline of that article was about not taking domestic vacations, but the reality of the protests is they are far more about the cost and availability of housing.

And blaming tourists for all the ills in their city, towns, villages and country.

This is how ridiculous these whiners are becoming.

For as long as I can remember, Montmartre has always been a tourism hub, and crowded with tourists.

Many of the businesses there wouldn't even exist or be sustainable without the tourists.

Why "overtourism" is becoming a global buzzword — even in Canada
With tensions rising over American tariffs, more Canadians are opting to vacation in Europe — or stay local — instead of heading south of the border.

But whether you're in Paris or Banff, one thing is becoming undeniable: Many tourist hotspots are feeling the strain.
