Dishwasher: Repair or Buy?

I have a dishwasher that is well over 10 years old, and the control board went out on us. Cost to replace it is about 400 bucks for labour and parts with the control board needing to be replaced.

Its a whirlpool, has 4 wash cycles, was sparingly used over the years because theres only 2-3 people in the house at a time.

I'm a fan of fixing things to keep them long term, but not exactly handy to do this stuff on my own, so I gotta pay extra for the labour. Part is about 250 bucks.

Bran new one costs $700 for something with a third row drawer for spoons and stuff . LG

Depending on how old your current one is . I’d lean towards new. Their quieter more efficient, smart.

If the repair is going to cost more then 50% of a new one then buy a new one.

Also consider that new units are not as reliable as the old ones. If you have no had any issues with the old one it MAY be worth repairing. Also you may want to reach out other techs to see if you can find a better price.

Even though I give Bosch the Thumbs Up Sign... I had my inlet valve go on mine and cost me 1.5K to fix my basement due to the leak. And the $60 for a new valve that I installed. Also put leak sensor on there.

I believe all tech charges you for assessment and quotation these days.

Just make sure you did a proper diagnostics. If you open the bottom cover you will find the paper documentation which goes over the troubleshooting steps.

I am well on the way fixing our 10 year old whirlpool which some electric contact cleaner. My issue was flashing lights on the panel, which is the machine tell you one of the button is shorted out.

If you decide to replace your machine you can break it down and sell the parts on ebay.

I had the same flashing lights. Went downstaira to turn off the dishwasher, waited about 10 minutes, turned it back on and it was back to flashing.

Nothing beats the good ol knobs.

Thorkell, check out my post : dishwasher-whirlpool-gu2475xtvy3-panel- ... t-2530542/

I've got diagram pictures.

It takes about 10 min to open the front of washer, simple to remove front control panel, flashing light just mean you got a short in the front touch panel, go buy yourself a can of electric contact cleaner. All you need is multi-meter that has diode test mode you can then identify which button is bad.

Send a picture of your control / touch panel to see if its the same model.

A couple of years ago my fairly old Whirlpool was doing quirky things.
Mostly, it would complete the cycle and then after a random delay begin again.

I assumed a control panel, and given prices I saw and the age, a new dishwasher would be the best solution.

Before doing so, I took apart the door/control unit section.
I inspected and reseated all connectors.
It has worked fine ever since.
I very much suspect it was the flexible pcb connection from the membrane keypad.

You say you aren't handy, but you may have nothing to lose trying.

Because of the difficulty in getting new appliances and the wait time, you're looking at waiting many, many months for a new one or have to settle for one that's in stock (usually the more expensive ones), plus paying for the install of the new one.

If everything is working great besides the control panel, I would pay the $250 for the new panel and replace it myself. You say you're not handy, but it's just a few screws and unplugging the panel. Look at this video (just an example of a Whirlpool panel replacement) and see if it's something you can attempt yourself:

There are ways to diagnose and repair it, but that may be much beyond your comfort level, but a simple replacement just needs one screwdriver...

There's a shortage of appliances too? SMDH

I'll try doing something today to see where the screws and all are located. Not very good at this stuff but wish me luck

Look up your model and control panel part number. Lots of YouTube videos (especially from RepairClinic) and they might have one specifically for your model. That one I posted was just one example.
