Dishwasher (Whirlpool GU2475XTVY3) : Panel button short / bad contact.

My love hate relationship with dishwashers. ( Whirlpool GU2475XTVY3 must be about 10 years old

- I hate these things as I do a better job faster any day, but my wife insists we use it.

Today the panel LED started blinking very fast, The repair sheet included in the machine, ref : GU2475XTVY0 Tech Sheet - W10142800 - Rev C.pdf

Says that flashing LED indicate a shorted panel. Oh boy I remember an substance running down on the front panel last week.

So I follow these instructions : checking circuit using the diode function of a multimeter.

And find that the Delay button has voltage when none should be present, when pressed it reads .5 volts like all the other buttons.

Button pressed : expected voltage

So clearly the panel has short / bad resistance. I will leave to to dry out , Given the replace part if worth about $300 CAN (https://www.reliableparts.ca/product/inv_15147239 )

I am wondering if there are any tricks for drying these types of press contacts.
I thought of heating the entire strip with a heat gun to see if I can pull off the assemble but that will probably destroy it.

Also thinking of spraying some WD-40 from the back side, to chase away the humidity.

Any other tricks I don't know about ?

Not so easy there Ma…
How well sealed is that thing? How about placing it above a furnace hot air duct that has good airflow for a day or two? A bright sunny window?
If you do try to pull it apart a heat gun is pretty brutal, use a hair dryer instead.

Is there room to bend the delay terminal or cover it either electrical tape or a few wraps of saran wrap, and check for full functionality? Or if you don't use the delay, snip the tab off. Assuming it doesn't need it for the self check...

The assembly is complex, worst case I would have cut it open to try and cancel out the "Delay" button.

I left the panel in a hot air flow for 12 hours. no change in diode test, still leaking 1.7 Volts when none should be passing.

So I tried this instead, gave the control panel a bath in electrical contact cleaner !
I know water got in so it needs to be displaced right ? I used some shop towels the soak up all the cleaner after.

It worked ! diode test the delay button now shows zero volts and .5 volts when pressed down.

I will let this dry again in hot air and try re-assembly tomorrow. I also should put a small bead of silicon around the edge of the panel as I know that water gets in the small gap around the perimeter.

Quick reconnect of all the parts to see if we have improvement. Yes we do . no more flashing lights.

Parts re-assembled and the machine lives once more. ( for how long ?)

How long about 2 months longs that's all. A few other cycles of electric contact cleaner worked but then that stopped and I had top peel apart the touch panel. I learned to do that while watching a PBS documentary on the interrogation technique used at Guantanamo by the CIA.

As the bad contact was only happening with the delay button which we don't use I tried to "cancel" it out using a exacto and drill bit that did not work so the hole got larger and larger.

I showed the old panel who the boss was with my final act, privative stuff but ever so satisfying

I finally had to order a new panel and go pick it up in the USA where it was a lot less expensive. ( I wish someone would start smuggling usefully things like dishwasher parts )

the new part :

Finished by taking the inside appart to get at and clean the drain filter and food impeller .

All cleaned and re-assembled

This is why normal people just dump them then parts break, they are fixable but it can take time, and during the down time your family will also expect you to wash the dishes on top of fixing the darn machine.

If I was living alone I would have just put in grow lamp, earth, seeds : turning the darn thing in mini-greenhouse.
