Do you prefer to have the home office on main floor or basement ?

I have been using the room in the basement as home office since pandemic starts. Recently thinking to move the home office to a room on the main floor as I thought main floor is more connected to the rest of house i.e. kids/wife upstairs and more daylight with more & bigger windows in the room on main floor. However, second thought about the drawbacks:

* Closer to main floor & second floor means more distraction.
* More & bigger windows could also mean more distraction whenever I look up outside the windows Face With Tears Of Joy
* Not sure if it is good idea to expose all office equipment i.e. laptops, larger monitors, printers along with work related documents on the desk next to the windows facing the streets.
* When the home office is on the main floor, it is more accessible/closer to anymore including guests to the house.

What do you guys think and prefer ? :)

Depends on how well your basement office space is finished and how well heated it is, etc.

Regarding the office equipment, if it was in the basement, remember that there is a chance that it could get flooded.

My basement is fully insulated and finished as part of the living area in the house.

Having worked in the basement last year in a room without even a window, it does get very dreary as there were times that I didn't see the light of day for a long time, so I would recommend an office that is not sub-terranean if possible. I've since moved my home office to a spare bedroom and it's glorious being able to see outside and see the light of day. Looking forward when it gets warmer to be able to open the window to get fresh air during the day.

Maybe you need to learn to manage your distraction levels if windows are not going to be helpful with your workflow. :)

Computer equipment and the sun don't mix well, so even a sheer curtain will help with that,

I do have window in the basement room (it is required by building codes), but of course not as many and big as the room on main floor.

It is definitely more "isolated" in the basement but it also gives you absolute quiet time when you need to focus on work and/or meeting rather than inevitably distractions from all activities on the main floor e.g. Kids noise, cooking in the kitchen, etc.

Yes, I can close the curtain on the main floor but then it defeat the purpose of having the home office on main floor for getting more sunlight.

Our spare room upstairs is used by my wife as home office

I do go upstairs to get some sunlights during break time though. :)

Mine is in the basement, always feels like I'm going down to my "hole" when working. But it's nice to be away from everyone when the kids were home schooling and all of us were here together. I would prefer something on the main floor or second floor but ONLY if it's a dedicated work space area.

Same thought. That's why I am thinking of moving the home office upstairs instead of staying in the man cave alone Face With Tears Of Joy but then it will have the concerns mentioned on my original posts even the room on main floor is a dedicated work area. I guess there are pros and cons for either options.

My wife is on the second floor's spare room with kids in their own room attending online classes. I am in the "man cave" in the basement by myself Face With Tears Of Joy

Agree. It is pretty cool in the basement in the summer.

Agreed on all points above. I'm in the basement and wife is on the 2nd floor. Basement is getting old, dreary and starting to get a little tired of not seeing daylight.

Just go upstairs whenever there is a break time. That's what I have been doing :)

Main floor is best IMO.

Better lighting, more accessible if you to make lunch/snacks/coffee/tea/answering door

If kids are older, they might tend to go to the downstairs where they can hangout without parents around. You can't do stuff down there when they're down there.
Basement is "cave" space for big screen TV, working out/exercise, storage, second fridge/freezer, furnace, water heats,
$1 saved is like $2 earned...remember that!

Walk out basement rocks for this. Windows at the back of the house are as big as the ones upstairs. My old house had a reasonable window but facing the neighbours, so not a lot of natural light. At least I had fresh air.

Building my wood shop (with storage walk out basement) out back (at some point, everything seems to take forever) and I think I am going to put an office space out there too for a few reasons… the days you have to really concentrate in plus sometimes I need YouTube when wood shoppin’

If you have unlimited money then go to the main floor with big windows and a ton of natural light, and make sure the room is as soundproofed as feasible. It's more convenient to be near the kitchen, etc, and the natural light is a HUGE support for mental health. For most people they don't get that choice.
