Does Costco automatically renew your membership??

Unless they changed there policy recently I have never been renewed automatically. I always paid at the cash register.

You have to sign up for automatic renewal on their credit card. Normally it's a manual renewal which can be done at cash register if you aren't upgrading/downgrading or at membership services. Maybe try refunding the gift card?

They'll refund your gift card no questions asked.

I think it's actually opt out and not opt in.

I can confirm this. I have the Capital One Costco Mastercard and they automatically renew your membership on an annual basis by charging the fee directly to the card.

This is in the fine print of the credit card's user agreement, or at least it was there for their AmEx card. It automatically renews on the card, however, you can cancel the auto renewal at the membership desk.

Back in the AmEx days, I auto-renewed online using MasterCard, out of spite. If they didn't try so hard for this backdoor renewal, I probably would have just paid it on the AmEx.

Thanks. Didn't know that. I must've opted out when I used to have their AMEX.
